Root [HELP] Tell me everything I need to know, lol.

OK, I'm potentially coming from the Samsung SCH-I515 and before that the Motorola A855. From that, obviously my carrier is VZW in case it was missed in my profile.

I have read a tiny bit of the stuff specific for a HTC device, but now want the power primer.

I already know that S-OFF is the bees' knees and the firewater does it all. Thanks!

But I am curious about the potential custom kernels and ROM's. With the kernels for the Gnex, tricksterMOD had quite a few options for overclocking not only the CPU, but the GPU, color weights, read ahead for the internal sdcard, sound and vibrator boosts, etc. Is this something that one can see on a custom kernel for the HTC?

I know this may sound like a silly question, but are the usual suspects (ROM devs) ala AOKP, PA, etc., and/or their features going to be available in ROM's for this device? Custom nav bars, status bar icons (battery, signal, etc.0, lockscreen (perhaps with weather), etc., etc., etc., and colorization of some or all? You know. The whole plethora of stuff that I know to be customizable on the Gnex. PIE, ribbons, whatever?

OK, I'm done with that lengthy ramblin' question.

TIA!

p.s. yeah I know I could have read for hours in the HTC one M7 area and other HTC sections, but . . . wait for it . . . I'm lazy!

What will be developed for the M8? Probably a lot. But remember, these guys buy the phone with their own money, spend their own time developing ROMs and other software, most of them can't afford to permanently brick their phones, so it takes time (to be careful), so you'll just have to wait and see.

Thank you. I understand perfectly well the risks a dev takes. I was just wondering what types of features have been developed for HTC devices in the past

There's a whole pile of stuff that will be available. ;)

Full customization via roms, themes and mods. We have a mod called the Exposed Module that allows all kinds of mods on the fly. Also there's the Viper Rom that has just about everything already baked in. :)

And there is already development happening for kernels since HTC dropped the kernel source.

Ultimately, S-off is like having full Admin rights on a PC. You can read and write to all of the partitions.

Check out the XDA Verizon One M8 page to see where development is for your variant: Verizon HTC One (M8) - xda-developers

Thank you very much. HTC is new to me as it will be my first time buying a phone that wasn't a 'nexus' type device. It has that extra s-off thingy. The Motorola Droid had an unlocked bootloader out of the box, the Gnex had one easily unlocked; and that was all that was needed to root and get full admin rights.

And that linky is already in my bookmarks.

An s-off HTC is one of the best phones out there IMO because HTC ships a superior bootloader in hboot. When its opened up all the way, I'd take it over any non-nexus device. You can scramble eggs with that bootloader. Multiple flash options and pretty much anything goes.

Nice. Come to think of it, HTC has been building Android devices for a very very very very long time now . . . . like they were the first . . . .

Over time HTC has really done an excellent job refining Sense. I am still a fan since ROMS provide an unlimited world of customization, one of my favorites is ViperROM. I definitely suggest checking put the rooting forums for the M7 if you want a close comparison of what ROMS will be able to offer for this device.

I personally coukd take or leave sense 5,but still leave my m7 stock since I dont want to lose zoe or boomsound. Zoe offers some really slick camera features, and what comes from front speakers of The m7 and m8 is the best sound you will ever hear on a mobile device.

HTC is somewhat odd with their "stages" of unlock.as you said most devices are either locked or unlocked. I've tried to use a galaxy nexus. As much I wanted to love it,it didn't happen I'm just too much of an HTC fanatic. The build quality and bootloader interface keep me here :)

Biggest thing to.remember with s off is that it really is not doing any security checks, and will happily flash flappy birds to the bootloader partition if you tell it to  so just don't take unnecessary risks in flshing important partitions, only use files from trusted sources, and make sure to double and triple check md5 sums so you don't inadvertently flash a bad file.

Holler if you have further questions :)

Thanks. With the Gnex and an unlocked bootloader, you could easily do the same I'm pretty sure. But I never did try it. . . . . . Maybe after I get my M8 I will just for kicks . . .

Code:
 fastboot flash boot angrybirds.apk

and see what happens, lol
