Root Help! Unrevoked doesn't seem to be rooting my phone

I have checked the other threads similar to this, but nobody seems to be having the same set of problems, and I have had to reset my phone to stock 5 times now trying to get this thing rooted.

When I start, my HBOOT Screen shows the following:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-2 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.97.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-AMTEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01

When I run Unrevoked3 using the instructions in the "rooting for dummies" thread, it runs through what looks like a complete install, then gets to the end and says Done on the computer, but the phone shows errors:

Verifying system type...
E:unsupported radio version
E:Update failed. Check /sdcard/soff.log.
E:Error in /data/local/unrevoked-forever.zip
(Status 42)
Installation aborted.

I have read that you then have to put the unrevoked-forever.zip onto your SD card and then flash it with the recovery. I did this and everything seemed like it was working. I saw the superuser icon in my apps, but when I installed Titanium Recovery or Rom Manager they both say they cant get root access.

What am I doing wrong?? It seems like it is getting partially through the rooting, but then not putting it into true root mode. help!?
 
1) When you go to hboot now, do you see S-OFF or S-ON. You are correct in that unrevoked has been having issues lately, and it seems like most people have had to flash unrevoked forever, separately.
2) Install a terminal emulator if you don't have one already, open it, and type "su" without the quotes. If the prompt changes to #, then you have root (at least the rom is rooted).
3) If you've never used titanium backup before, you need busybox, which you can obtain by press the "problems" button. Do that if the above two steps check out.
 
Well, while waiting to see if anyone had a response, I now see that my phone has updated and the HBOOT is 2.10. From what I see I cant root one at this level, and I am assuming that was my original problem too.

:( that's unfortunate. That wasn't the original problem (as there is a definite problem with unrevoked), but it's definitely your problem now. Just out of curiosity did you have 2.10 before or after you ran unrevoked forever?
 
I dont know what it was before I started, because the first time I ran the program, i was following a much less complete guide that didn't make you check, and didn't warn you about the Hboot revision.

After I did the unroot procedure, I was left with the numbers i gave in my original post.

When looking around, it looks like I could possibly still root my phone by doing the long way using commands into the terminal? Seems like a lot of work though.
 
Oh you did an unroot? Where did you get it from? That's probably how you ended up with 2.10 if you grabbed something too new. Or did you actually install the OTA later? Usually you at least get a prompt.

You can still root if you follow the steps in the link I posted, but it's definitely not as simple. Also, I'd check if you have s-off or not (due to unrevoked forever). I hontestly don't know what will happen if you follow the hboot 2.10 root guide with s-off from unrevoked forever already applied. Did you flash unrevoked forever before or after unroot?
 
I flashed the unrevoked forever son when I was unrooting. I got the unrooting stuff right from the dummies thread.

I did an OTA because it prompted me. I didn't even think about the fact it would update the HBOOT :(

What link are you referring to? I think I missed your link.

Got it. So at this point, you should have s-on with the new hboot. That means you are fully unrooted with the new OTA. Your options are to follow the steps for rooting 2.10, which, like I said, is not as simple, or wait until unrevoked gets an update.

And for future reference, never accept OTAs if you care about root. While it won't be as easy for you now, you will get root eventually. It is very important that once you do have root, that you do not accept OTAs.
 
Ok. Thanks for all your help. I was hoping to get into this a bit now that Cyanogen has 4G around the corner. Its much harder than I thought it would be.

I have learned a ton tonight though. Thank you.
 
Hi, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this but I have followed the unrevoked instructions and hboot etc updating drivers and the process seemed to complete no problems.

I have tried to install Titanium backup and selecting 'problems' to install busybox but it still comes up as unable to access root.

When I hboot I see S-ON.

Can someone please tell me if I am rooted or not??

Superuser is there.

I was trying to root so as to then figure out how to get more apps off the internal memory and on to the SD, but that's another days work.

Any help appreciated

LATELY?

Seems like it has been a problem for over a month. I'm curious as to what changed that makes it work this way.
 
Im a completely noob to rooting. I've had my evo for 4 months now maybe 5. when i first tried the rooting for dummies method once complete i still had s-on. i then did the zip to sd card and flash and it now shows s-off

is there any other ways to test if im fully rooted?

If you were able to flash unrevoked forever and now have s off, you are rooted. You can only have a custom recovery image ie clockwork mod or amon if you are rooted. But if you want to be sure do this : Download terminal emulator form the market. Open it. Type su and then press enter. If it returns with $ you are not rooted. If it returns with # you are rooted.
