Root HELP!!! Update trying to start...How can I stop???

I just got this phone and it is on hboot 1.12 and I want to keep it there so I can root. I just got the update notification. I seem to remember in past phones you could accept the update and then cancel to get rid of the notification. Right now my wifi is OFF and my mobile network is OFF. So I accepted the update thinking I could cancel. Obviously, it doesn't have a data connection so it is "Paused" with NO OPTION TO CANCEL! So the minute I give it a data connection, IT WILL RESUME! How can I stop this?????? I am assuming a hard reset would do it....anything else????

Are you talking about the download?

Once it's done, it'll give you the option to Install Now or Install Later. Choose Install later.

Then. open Settings -> Apps, go to the "All" tab, and clear data for "Updater". Also, go to Settings -> System Updates -> HTC Software Update and uncheck the box to automatically check for updates. Reboot, and hopefully you should be good and the prompt/update should be gone.

Okay, I got it figured out. I did not do exactly what you said but very close. Let me explain clearly in case someone else gets in this position.

The update was paused due to lack of a data connection. If you pulled down the notification bar and tapped it, that is what it said with an "OK" as your only choice to make that particular box go away. The notification icon remained and the update remained in que once a data connection was restored.

So, I went into Settings>Apps>ALL>Updater...just as the Captain mentioned above and Force Stopped the Updater as well as cleared the data. The notification remained....BUT...this time when I pulled it down and then tapped on the "Paused Update" the same message popped up....EXCEPT...there were 2 choices. I don't remember the other one but the one that interested me was "Discard". I selected that and the notification disappeared!

Thanks Captain!!!!

PS...plz realize I never allowed it to download as suggested. I didn't have the balls to do that. I think I would have taken the safer course of just doing a hard reset. I don't want to have to go through any extra hoops to root this thing. I did on the Evo 3d(S-ON) and it really took the fun out of rooting with all of that adb crap!
