no i am coming from a feature phone, just went from old phone to new phone. they did it for me at the vzw store, using backup assist.

i don't need them in gmail, its just phone numbers, no e-mails.

Yes but gmail will hold all contacts not just email addresses. Once you since with gmail you will never have to worry about loosing your contacts again.

The benefit of syncing them with gmail is that you will never lose them again as they will automatically sync with any android phone you sign into. Here is what I would do.

1) Sync your contacts with the verizon backup assistant
2) Go to the people app, menu>Import/Export>Export to Storage
3) Connect your phone to your computer
4) Copy the file with your contacts to your computer
5) Log into gmail and switch to Contacts
6) At the top, click the button that says "More">Import
7) Select the file you copied from your phone
8) Let gmail upload the contacts
9) On your phone, Settings>Accounts & Sync>tap your gmail account>make sure contacts is checked as synced
10) Let gmail sync your contacts to your phone
11) Disable Verizon backup assistant
12) Enjoy (Profit?)

Why couldn't he just sync the contacts with gmail then disable Verizon backup?

Why couldn't he just sync the contacts with gmail then disable Verizon backup?

It might be possible with this phone. My experience with the Eris was that contacts that were synced from verizon did not sync with gmail and could only be synced in this manner. Adding a new contact would sync with gmail, but from what I know Verizon synced contacts were made into phone only contacts.

I actually hope this has been changed, but I just don't know and don't have a way to check.

ok so i did this and now in my people app it shows a bunch of email addresses without names...when i had it set to only show my vzw backup contacts it was showing only my phonebook.

how do I get it to only display my phone numbers and not e-mail in the people app? i use it only for texting. i have the gmail app for sending e-mail and looking for e-mail contacts. and i'm not on any "social networks"

Your best bet is to use the Phone app instead of the people app. If you scroll all the way to the right and scroll down you should see a list titled "All Contacts with Phone Numbers." You can call them from there, and to send a text, tap on their picture (or the placeholder) and and select the little text icon on the bottom right.
