Root Help with akp and odex

Ok since the ics system dump came out... i figured i could play with some of the apps (take email for example).. when i open the app folder i see email.apk and email.odex... first what the freak is a odex.. and second do i need both???

Yes you need both unless you're on a deodexed rom such as shabby mod. I'm not entirely sure what an odex is/for.
