How do I back up my apk files and my SMS messages before a total wipe?

Can't find them via computer USB.

You can either use Titanium Back up or RomToolBox, and back up your apps and data

For SMS you can use an app from the play store called SMS Backup and Retsore

I think my backup does sms as well as data
Appsaver is good for just apks

They don't appear to find my stock apps including the voice recorder.

i do it the hard way i upload them on 4shared since its APK files hahaha
but whatever works easier for you.

Are you rooted, or running still stock ??

You can only backup stock apps if you're rooted, also the stock messaging app has backup built in, just go into the menu and select it.
