Root Help With "Can't Find Script" Error

Barats

Android Enthusiast
I'm trying to flash some zips of boots and splashes And I get this:

Installing Update...
E: Can't Find update script
Installation aborted

Any idea what the deal is?

1) What specifically are you trying to flash?
2) What recovery (clockwork or RA) and what version do you have?

Are you sure it's a package meant to be flashed from recovery? Are there instructions given with it? Can you give me a link?

Sure, hold on. The other boot animation I installed did so that's what I'm trying here.

Wait, nevermind, here's the instructions I found in the actual thread. I just downloaded the file and assumed you do it as usual. Not familar with this method but will try it.

And I'm assuming this is why it doesn't work.

- Move the splash screen file (.rgb565) to sdk/tools folder
- Power off device
- Boot up into boot loader (hold volume down key while pressing power)
- Navigate to "FASTBOOT" with the volume keys and press the power button
- Plug device in (you'll see "FASTBOOT USB" highlighted in red)
- Open a command window in Windows (Windows key + r then type "cmd.exe")
- Prompt to sdk/tools
- Now type this into adb window to install splash screen: Code:
fastboot flash splash1 evosplash1.rgb565
- After files have been pushed to device, navigate (volume keys) down to "REBOOT" and press power key.

Yep, always follow directions :). Zips need to be packages with the appropriate scripts, etc. in order to be flashed from recovery. That particular method requires adb, it looks like. That might be the case for splash screens in general. I'd have to look into it.

Right, so not all splash screens need to be installed this way. Some can be flashed if packaged that way. Can you give me the actual link? I want to make sure I'm sending you down the right direction.

Got it, hold off on doing anything atm; I'll get some info together for you.

To answer your question, you'd need to install the sdk and use adb and get that folder. But like I said, hold off for right now.

Ok, Here goes:

1) I take absolutely no responsibility if you brick your phone. This is information I have collected, and you proceed from here at your own risk.

2) This link is old, and it assumes people rooted with the most common root method available at the time (toast's method). As a part of that, you got what was called the engineering bootloader (version 0.76). Now, almost nobody uses the eng bootloader. The only reason anyone who rooted with unrevoked ever used it up until recently was because it was required to flash Cyanogenmod. That is no longer the case. Those who wanted it, however, and rooted with unrevoked when that became common were able to get the eng bootloader from here:

RA revovery and ENG hboot in one flash after UR Forever - xda-developers

That being said, I don't recommend you flash this. I'm telling you this only so that you understand what's going on. Those who downgraded their hboot to the eng bootloader could not use any previous nandroid backups, as they require the same hboot version, and generally had to reflash whatever kernel they were using. Now, most people don't quite understand the purpose of the eng bootloader other than that they're told it includes "extended fastboot commands". What that means is that you can issue fastboot commands remotely (i.e. from a command prompt on your pc). This is not normally possible. So, these particular splash screens (or the method to install them, rather) require you to have this engineering bootloader.

3) In searching for a workaround a little more realistic for you, I found this post from the thread:

xda-developers - View Single Post - [SPLASH] Custom Splash Screens by 12MaNy

What this person did was take the splash screens that you normally have to install via fastboot and inserted them into an already packaged PC36IMG file, which can be flashed from hboot. The particular file they are referring to is this one:

public:forever [RootWiki]

The instructions for how to flash such a file are given in that link. Unfortunately, I tried to download it, but it looks like it's no longer available.

4) Having read the above, you now have two choices:

a) Learn how to install adb, and take your chances downgrading to the eng bootloader. Keep in mind that if you have a newer phone with the newer partition info, this most likely will cause problems. Find out by typing "cat /proc/mtd" without quotes from a terminal emulator on your phone. If erase size is 40000, don't even bother trying this. Personally, I find this overly drastic just for some splash screens.

b) Find someone who has downloaded the unrevoked splash screen before, and has it still, or try to get unrevoked to reupload it or send it to you, and try that alternative method.

I'm going to reiterate, here, that I take no responsibility for you bricking your phone if none of this information works. I know some people have done it successfully, but you must do the appropriate amount of reading, and understand that you always take risks when doing things a little out of the ordinary like this. If you have any questions about any of this, please ask before doing something you don't fully understand.

Thanks!

This seems like a lot of work to try and get a custom boot and flash screen, lol. Wish they could just do them where you flash them. Much easier. I'm going to try the ADB method. And I have the very first versions of this phone. Got mine on launch day so I should be good in that aspect.

Oh, you're fine, but read that whole thread on downgrading to the eng bootloader before doing so. I still think it's drastic, but that's my opinion :).

I too was curious about this, but since it's just a splash screen, I didnt want to put too much effort in, however that link you posted makes it sound like a very easy work around, only question I have is in regards to the "creat an unsigned zip" part of this post

"Here is how i do it:
I create an unsigned zip to be flashed.

Im Fully rooted, NAND Unlocked, and S-Off
via unrEVOked 3.21

1) Download Unrevoked Forever's custom splash screen PC36IMG.zip
2) Open the zip and delete the splash1.img
3) Download the custom splash screen you like and rename it: splash1.img
4) put the file in PC36IMG.zip
5) put the Zip on the root of your SD Card.
6) Power Down your phone.
7) Boot your phone into HBOOT (hold down "volume down" and press the power button)
8) Your phone will automatically find the zip and ask if you want to apply it.
9) Press "Volume Up" for yes
10) It will ask to reboot. Press "Volume Up" for yes.
11) your phone reboots, and you see the new Splash Screen"

How would I creat an "unsigned zip" I dont even know what that is? Or is he just explaining his process? I can follow steps 1-11 no problem, but I'm trying to figure out if steps 1-11 are all thats needed, or if you ALSO have to create this mysterious "unsigned zip" before hand :)
Thanks

Right, he's just referring to steps 1-11. The problem is the zip you're supposed to use is the PC36IMG from unrevoked, which apparently isn't there anymore. Or if it is, I couldn't seem to download it. Go to the unrevoked page I linked to and see if you can download it. That, by far, is the easier method.

EDIT:

I just downloaded it no probs...

Well, there you go. I couldn't get it to download. I'll go try again.

EDIT2: Yeah, I can download it now. Maybe they were having hosting issues when I tried. Lame.

So, to anyone who reads this, if you're going to try this, do that method. Don't mess with the eng bootloader unless you already have it.

thanks I will try to install a splash screen right now and report back

Cool, let me know how it goes. I, honestly, couldn't care less what the splash screen looks like so I never bothered. I'd be interested to hear how well this works, though.

If you ever want the stock splash screen back, you can get it here from calkulin:

[ ROM / 1-3 ] Calkulin's EViO 2 v1.7.6 [ 3.70 l Undervolted l Battery Saver script ] - xda-developers

Look at the attachments in the second post. Since he has an optional splash screen for his ROM, he has provided the stock one. I'm sure there's other sources for it, but this is the one I know of off hand.

ok so my I was trying for the splash screen with the skeleton guy giving the middle finger here Red EVO Splash Screen - xda-developers
but I ended up with 3 droid guys on skate boards...??
I downloaded the zip file for the skeleton guy and renamed the whole zip to splash1.img so now I'm wondering if instead of renaming the whole zip file, maybe I was supposed to unzip the "Red Evo splash screen.zip" (which there are 2 .img files inside) and renames those (or 1 of them atleast of them to splash1.img and then put that into the PC36IMG.zip file?

oh also when I put the new PC36IMG.zip file on the root of my sd card, it asked if I wanted to replace or keep both etc.. I chose to replace, not sure if that matters, dont think it would, but I figured if I chose to "keep both" that it would have probly renamed one of them

1) The OP linked to a splash screen that was already unzipped. What you have there is a zip file containing the splash screen and a picture of it in a zip file. Unzip the file, rename the rbg565 file to splash1.img, and use that. Ignore the png file.

2) Did you already have a PC36IMG.zip file from some previous flash? If you chose to replace, you just got rid of whatever was there and replaced it with the new one you intended to flash. Common procedure is to remove PC36IMG files from the root of your sdcard once you are done flashing them so that you don't accidentally flash them again. Not a big deal with a splash screen, but I guarantee you'd be pretty mad if you ever accidentally flashed a PC36IMG intended for unrooting.

that makes sense, thanks! yea I had previously installed a splash screen that I found that someone had made into a flashable zip.

Awesome it worked! easy as can be, I know have a skeleton flipping me off followed by an android peeing on an apple boot animation lmao , too much fun :)

maybe now I can look into making m own
