Help Help with getting SDK Mngr to recognize Epic

Total newbie in programming and trying to learn through books how to program for Android. I am using Vista as OS, and Eclipse with attached SDK Manager. In the book it is saying to test your application on your phone plug in the USB and it will show up as a device on SDK. From a couple of different forums I have read that you can't do this with an Epic 4g and SDK. Can this be right? and if not can anyone help me set this up so I can test on my phone please?
