To clear up a bunch of space:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Maps > Uninstall Updates
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Maps > Uninstall Updates
Your son has too many apps installed. If you have Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) then there will be a bar on the bottom of the "Manage Applications" setting telling you the total space and how much you have.left, in your sons case, prob less than 10kb. I'm not sure about this bar in Froyo (2.2.2)
