Help with new SII phone

RBaccari

Lurker
Does the SII not have it's own wi-fi capabilities? My phone picks up other local free wi-fi spots when away from home but do you not get wi-fi capabilities associated with the phone when you have the data package that is required?
I am with Bell for my service, maybe that has something to do with it? Bell makes you pay for every single thing you do with the phone seperately. GPS is extra charge per month as are games and apps and music. Sucks!

The S2 has a full wifi capability, but I'm not sure what problem you are trying to describe.

GPS is not extra. Don't use their GPS app. You can use free app from Google called navigation. I am using sygic when traveling in a roaming area.

Question for anyone!

So I just got my phone today ATT version. I can't manage to change the notification tone on my phone. I'm using zedge to download new ringtones and notification tones. I can't even change the notification tones to the other stock ones either. It's just stuck on a whistle tone. I've gone through the root menu to add notification and add'd the tones there to no avail. Any help would be amazing, thanks.

Thanks for your replies. I have been having a number of issues.
1. When I choose settings - wireless and network - wifi settings, I get to the page (on phone) where it says "obtaining IP address" from my desktops' internet provider service I have in my home. Trouble is that it just keeps switching back and forth from "scanning" to "obtaining IP address" and never actually connects to anything!
What is the "data packet" that I sometimes see? Is that what gives the phone the ability to connect to the internet? If so then why does the phone give you options to connect to a wifi source? Confused!!

2. When I connect my Galaxy SII to the computer via a usb cable, nothing happens. And I mean NOTHING! Actually I take that back, it will start charging the phone but nothing else will happen. The computer does not recognize that anything was connected to it so you cannot import any photos to the computers' hard drive. I have tried to read some posts about this but I cannot understand them. I am not savvy when it comes to computer talk so I do not know what this Kies thing is or why a phone has to have it!? Or "flashing your phone" or "odin" etc. I have also read about "recovery" of the phone and info about "firmware", do not know what these are either. Seems to be a lot of tech in this phone that makes it very hard to use or fix when something goes wrong, unless you are a tech wiz!
Also my phone has info on it about the info on the phones SD card. Where is this SD card they are talking about?!! My old Samsung instinct had a micro SD card that inserted into the side of the phone. You could easily remove it put into an SD card adapter and insert into your computers' card reader slot and import all your photos, video, etc. with ease. I found what I think is the sim card (not even sure what a "sim card" is tho) inside the phone when you remove the plastic back of the phone. It is shaped similar to an SD card but much thinner. My phone provider is Bell and this thin card is from Bell also. What is this?

If anyone can shed some light on these issues I would be grateful. Searching through the forums leads to more confusion as the posts are very tech heavy and I do not follow what they are saying. Also many of the posts do not relate to a canadian Samsung Galaxy SII. A lot of the info they give as to what you will see on your phone when you open a certain section is completely incorrect for my phone. Very frustrating as poster usually says " after you choose the ask button", for example, when trying to connect with a usb cable you will see the "connection to usb", but my phone does not have this option so those instructions are of no use at all! Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

1) Data connection. You can have data connection through wifi or data line (3G/2G/HSPDA). In Settings/Wireless & Network/Mobile Networks, click on Use Packat Data to ON 3G etc. In Settings/Wireless & Network/Wifi Settings, click on wifi to turn it ON. It will then search for available wifi networks and you need to press on the wifi connection that you want to connect to. If it keeps trying to scan for IP address, either the connection is bad and keep recycling, or the wifi itself is blocking you, say maybe having a fixed number of connections and you can't connect.

And why wifi and data? Because wifi you can connect from anywhere and cheaper / free, say at your local coffee shop. Data is pay as you use.

2) You are doing it wrong. If you want to connect the SGS2 to the computer and use it like a thumbdrive, then you fo to Settings/Wireless & Network/USB Utilities, and click on the connect USB. Only then you connect the USB cable. Then you click another button on the phone and the computer should be able to scan the phone memory.

If you just connect directly with the USB cable, two things can happen. If you have kies, it will try to connect via that. Just click home to close it and you can charge the phone. If you don't have kies, you can charge the phone, but the computer will keep trying to figure out what you are trying to connect to it, and will probably just say a device is connected and cannot work properly.

3) You should take a picture if you want to ask what everything is. You can always download the SGS2 user manual. And I don't know if Micro SD card is provided with the phone. For me it isn't. It does of course come with a sim card, because else, it won't work as a phone. Anyway, I do think what you are holding is the sim card. You probably need to get your own SD card.

Cheers

RBaccari, It's only as techie as you want it to be. Sounds like you haven't installed Kies (search for "Samsung Kies") which is Samsungs attempt at PC suite for the phone. Within Kies there are a bunch of USB drivers. So after it is loaded on the PC and you connect the phone directly it will appear as a device under "my Computer" in windows. Samsung screwed up only mentioning Kies as an after thought on most documents. Mind you Kies tries but has many short comings. I use it simply for firmware update and backups. I am not interested in rooting, flashing, ODIN etc (yes it sounds offensive doesn't it? but those are the terms used!!).

Every phone has a 'SIM Card' it is a hardware key that allows the phone to log onto the carriers network. If you change phone carrier they send you a different SIM card. SIM stands for "Subscriber Identification Module" by the way.

There is no need to worry about flashing, firmware, ODIN etc. Take your time, besides Kies there is a 120 page PDF user manual out there from Samsung that you may want track down on google just search for "samsung i9100 user manual" or some thing like that. There is lots of detail, but if you don't understand or want to post in public, just click on the users name who posted then 'send private message' to ask them a polite clarifying question. The moderators are great and very patient. Many new folks join and we don't expect new folks to know the jargon, we just forget to clarify sometimes.
