Root Help with recovery error

I am racking my brain on this one and can't figure it out.

I am currently S-On, rooted with Philztouch recovery. When I try to flash a different recovery it just hangs on the splash screen and doesn't do anything else. I can still do a hard reboot and everything, just can't install a new recovery.

I am trying to flash a new rom but my bootloader is the older one and it wont let me flash any new roms.

Can I update my bootloader without s-off? Can I even get back to pure stock to flash the OTA if I am s-on?

Please help

OK, we need to sort out the confusion.

Philz really doesn't work for the M8.

What recovery did you try to install and how did you try to install it?

What carrier are you on?

Are you simply rooted or have you installed a custom rom? If so, which one?

What hboot do you have?

Could we get a picture of your hboot screen?

Let's get a baseline of your info before jumping ahead to your final questions.

Depending on what your answers are, the final answers about hboot and returning to stock could change.

When I first rooted philz was the only one (supposedly) that would work for early lollipop ROMs.

So I'm using the philz recovery. At&t m8. Running a candykat ROM. I am rooted but s-on. My bootloader is 1.16.0.00. I can try to get a picture of my screen in the morning.

At this point I can't install any other ROMs since my bootloader is out of date and I can't figure out how to flash a new boot loader.
