Root help with root

I've had my ally since last fall. I am out of memory and am ready to root and get rid of apps that came installed and move apps to sd card.. I have been searching and reading for days and my head is spinning. Alot of the posts are a few months old or older so I want to make sure I am doing it right. I came across this;

" I have found a new program on XDA called GingerBreak APK to root and unroot Ally. It is run 100% from your phone like z4root was, and will root/unroot at the click of a button. It uses the newer GengerBreak exploit and works on Ally running both 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.
To Root/unroot 2.2.1 or 2.2.2
1.Go to [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers and down GingerBreak APK v1.2 **Please read through the original post for need to know info**

2.copy it to the root directory of your SD Card

3. use a file management program such as Root to navigate to the file (GengerBreak-1.20.apk) and install on your phone. explorer https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result

4. Open program and press "Root Device"

5. wait for phone to reboot. Congratulations, your rooted. "

After I do this , then what? I read about "Titanium backup" that would allow me to move and delete unwanted apps.

Will I loose everything on my phone when I do this; pics, apps?
Thanks for any help, I know all this has been answered but iI missed it or ddn't understand it.
Is there anyone I could chat with while I am doing this to help out?

Ok, to answer your question, NO, you will not lose any data by using Gingerbreak to root. HOWEVER, you're talking about modifying system files when you do gain root access. Since you got your ally last fall, there's a good chance it shipped with an OS greater than V6, so you may not have fastboot. I recommend using the official guide posted by Trident to root, and if you need help, pop into IRC and ask for Sora1995, cr5315 or J2Cloud. One of us will be able to assist you with any problems or concerns you may have. And Titanium Backup is a way for you to backup, restore, move and delete apps, settings and data on your phone easily. If you have any more questions, just let me know!

Fastboot isn't really needed but if anything ever happens to your Ally, fastboot could save your phone. I've seen many a Ally die from not having fastboot. It's your choice whether or not you want it, but I reccomend that you use Tridents' guide to get it.

Get Quick Boot from the market and choose the bootloader option. If you reboot to a blue screen, you have fastboot. (Pull the battery to restart)
If it just reboots you don't have fastboot.

Got Quick Boot, wouldn't work, kept getting a popup to foreclose

Yes, you can. I've helped many of people running Vista with the guide. The only issue is the drivers. I tend to use the ones from the LNGNPST guide. That almost always solves driver issues on Vista.

LNGNPST guide? Not sure what that is. I might have acess to a computer with Windows 7 this weekend and will try tridents guide. If not I'd like to try it with vista if i can figure it out. One question with that is in step 1 in the guide downloading "Froyo.zip", underneath that it says
"Mirror 1"?? sorry for so many questions, just don't understand this stuff yet.
Thanks

Trident's guide, while it works, is more dangerous than the LGNPST, because the LGMU is finicky. Stop by the IRC again and I'll do it all for you if you'd like.

When i try to reboot into recovery, the only thing it goes to is the bluescreen. How do i get into recovery from that? I tried going to recovery through the rom manager way, and i also tried to by selecting it when you hold down power off.

You can't boot into recovery from fastboot. And using ROM Manager and/or clockworkmod recovery isn't a smart idea. I've seen quite a few phones get ruined from that. Come to the IRC and we'll set you straight.
