Help with Rooting

Well-Known Member
Hey y'all

just want to make sure of a few things before i go ahead with rooting with CF Root.

Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100XXKE7
Kernel version:2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555ROOT@DELL101 #2

Unbranded bought from Play.com in the UK

1. Is the right Kernel to flash ' CF-Root-SGS2_XW_CLK_KF3-v4.0-CWM4 '

2. If i was to restore my phone to how it was, being unrooted in case of warranty problems. How would i go about that? from what i have read, i just flash stock firmware. If that is correct, where would i find this stock firmware and how would i know which is the correct one to flash?

I think I would follow this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
How would i know which original firmware to download though? Would i have to have 'XWKF3 Generic UK+Europe'? or 'XWKF3 Stock Kernel' which requires a password?

3. Should i follow another method of rooting rather than CF Root?

Thanks

1. Yes

2. Flashing a stock kernel will still keep you rooted, but you won't be able to install custom roms (AFAIK). If you have problems, you're best off wiping your device and starting fresh with a brand new XWKF3 firmware install (from the link you gave), but if you don't want that, I think newer versions of SuperOneClick come with an 'Unroot' button :P

3. I've found CF Root to be very n00b-friendly (being an Android n00b myself), so if you're asking questions like the ones above, I'd suggest you use it.

1. yes
2. flashing a stock firmware will REMOVE root..but u will also need a device called a usb jig to reset ur flash counter, to show that ur phone has never been flashed with any other firmware/kernels. u can find the stock firmware for ur phone here:
[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/2/3/4, KI1/2/3/4/8 Download - xda-developers

although its arguable whether this actually validates ur warranty again. its a bit risky, if ur very concerned about warranty, flashing/rooting is not recommended

3. CF root is the easiest and best way to root, for me

however, i think it'd be better if u upgrade ur firmware to something newer, such as KI3/KI8, running android 2.3.5.. since ur using odin anyway, might as well root on a newer firmware. instructions for this is available on the same link that i posted above

I'd agree there. I'm on a plan and I pay $9.95 a month for insurance. That way, if I break it, I get a new one, regardless of whether it's rooted or not. Warranty doesn't even enter the picture :D

great, then just go ahead with wat i posted above :D

EDIT: ah crap, i thought the above post was by the OP.. sorry.. HTCandroid, please note the warranty issues :)

thanks y'all. I ain't such a newcomer to Android, more of a newcomer to Samsung :D on my trusty HTC Desire I done pretty much everything i could to it, with this newer and more expensive phone though im a little more nervous so need to make sure of these things :D

Regarding the part in bold... Can't i just do that after rooting so that i can backup all my apps and what not with titanium, so that i dont lose them?

Also i am not sure yet but i may end up flashing custom rom's anyway

Yeah you can root then upgrade your firmware. Its just a little longer that way as the new firmware will remove root so you have to root twice. But since you want to backup before you flash the new firmware its definitely the way to go. Although saying that you don't need to do a wipe to flash official firmware so you won't lose anything any way. But some custom roms require a wipe so if you're unsure which you are going to do its best to play it safe.

thanks.

I want to be able to use a USB jig so do you think i should get the official XEO KI3 (im in the UK but from what i understand that does not matter) and then change the bootloader to the one linked in the Original Frimware thread on XDA, or is it okay to just flash the Frankenstein version?

basically is there any problems with the Frankenstein version? especially the non wipe version as i could use that and just root once?

I've never flashed a Frankenstein firmware so I don't really know. I'm sure someone else here will have an answer though.
