Root Help with Safestrap -- Simple Question

Okay so I have finally decided to install safestrap to my phone because it is obviously the better way to go. I currently have Liberty 2.0 installed and I love it. I would like to keep that ROM when I go to safestrap aand essentially "Dual Boot" it with CM9... now I know that is isnt actually dual booting and it jujst swaps them out whenever you want but I still like that ability. But I digress... my question is this, How do I install safestrap without sbfing because wont installing it over bootstrap cause a bootloop? and the newer bootstrap doesnt have a simple uninstall.

If I wasn't clear just let me know Thanks

I assume you're using Koush's bootstrap, with the skull looking head...it's red? Just uninstall it from the Applications menu. You can then install the SafeStrap .apk and recovery. I had this same fear as well, but just went for it and it worked. I currently have Liberty on my main system and AOKP on my safe, which I use as a daily driver. Since SafeStrap protects the main system, occasionally, I remove SS, install bootstrap (the red one), flash my main system to whatever, then switch back to SafeStrap.

So, moral of the story, uninstalling it from the phone menu should allow you to use SafeStrap successfully, if it fully removes bootstrap, idk, but I've been able to uninstall it and install SS with no issues.

I am using the app with the red skull thing but I also use the rom manager one... does that make a difference?

Two totally different things. You should probably uninstall both, but for different reasons. The "red skull thing" is the one you will really need to uninstall before you install SafeStrap, though.

Be sure you have lots of spare room on your internal SD memory though. SafeStrap sort of doubles the space needed on internal memory if I understand how it works right. Not the chip you can unplug, the internal built-in memory.

Glenn - sad and angry Verizon will never allow ICS on the Droid3

You really don't need double the space. It ONLY stores safe system and original system data (<1GB total, for me) to the internal SD by default. If you make extra nandroid backups, you can choose internal or external SD. My nandroids run about 850MB each. I really have no shortage of room since I only keep one nand of each system at a time and have a 16GB external SD card.

I agree with Glen, you MUST remove the "red skull" boot strapper, and I'm also just not a fan of ROM manager. IMO, it causes many more headaches than it solves. All of these ROMs can be DL'd and dropped onto your phone then flashed with boot/safe strap. CWM hasn't seen updates in months (5.0.2.6) and you can just as easily manage your nandroids with any SD card browser.

Sorry for the digression, but we still don't know that. All that Verizon reported were the devices that will get ICS so far - they said that there may be more.

I was wondering if the fact that the D3 was a world phone would lead to a reluctance to allow an update, but they announced that the Inc2, also a world phone, will get ICS, so that will not be an excuse.

My guess is that Moto is concentrating on the 1 GB models that they already promised will get ICS and will decide on the 512 MB models like the D3 later on. Anyway, we still don't know if or when the D3 will get ICS.

I think that ROM Manager is great for a phone that has official CyanogenMod support, as you can use it to flash stable or nightly updates. For a phone like the D3 that is not officially supported, it seems unnecessary to me.

As for Clockwork, it's a fine recovery, but Safestrap really seems better, so why not go with it, if you can?

I undertand that the red skull app and ROM manager are different, however they are installing the same bootstrap, the Red Skull app was a tweaked version created by hashcode. For some reason my pone only succesfully booted into bootstrap when I used both methods of installation.

Will I still be fine installing Safestrap if I have the Rom Manager version as well as long as I remove it before installing? I assume I would but I want to be sure.

ROM manager installs the same CWM as the red skull. Both are Koush's BP Tools bootable 5.0.2.6 CWM. As long as you remove the apps first, you should be able to install SafeStrap fine. I like SS much better because I find it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to brick my phone. As long as you play with the safe system, it's fine. Just don't format /system from within SS, as that will uninstall SS after you exit it. I've left myself at a few Moto logos after formatting /system when bricked.

As for ROM manager on this phone, yes, I do agree that it works well for CM phones, but since we don't have much, and it's a bit confusing, I feel it does more harm than good to the D3. Using SS and sideloading .zips to my SD card has been flawless.

Thats where I am worried because they are not exactly the same... koushs version is not bp tools bootable... just hash codes tweaked version

I think you have them backwards (but maybe I do). The one with a green icon is Hashcodes' and is not BP bootable. The red one is Koush's and is what you get through ROM Manager. This is BP bootable. Regardless, I've had both installed on this phone, and now use SafeStrap without issues. I uninstalled Hash's through the app when I ditched it, and just removed the app of Koush's before going to SS.

I believe that Hash's is CWM 4.something, but the red one is the same as ROM manager, which is 5.0.2.6. This is the one I used to flash my good system before setting up SafeStrap to dual boot Liberty and ICS AOKP.

K well first I just want to let you know I installed Safestrap no problem so thanks!

And just so you know for the future I think that the green icon is hashcodes OLD bootstrap, it doesn't allow ROM flashing and is incompatible with ROM Manager. The Rom Manager version is contained within Rom Manager and does not have a separate app, that one belongs to koush and is NOT BP bootable... The Red Skull is Hashcodes Tweaked version of koush's Rom manager bootstrap and adds in BP tools support, this one can be used on top of the Rom Manager version with no compatibility issues... I believe I am correct on that...

Ok, that's sounding to start right. 5.0.2.6 is Koush's, and Hash tweaked it as an .apk for BP booting, but it's still 5.0.2.6, just BP bootable. :) Regardless, I'm glad you got SS up and running.

I have a quick question.. I got CM9 installed in safe mode. I wanted to switch back to stock to record videos, as I thought that was the whole idea of safestrap..
I went to turn off safe mode in the recovery menu and it said "warning can't be undone!!"
I just wanted to be sure.. Is this what safestrap does? I mean can I switch freely between my stock rom and CM9? Or does it like delete everything in safe mode when i turn it off? I'm confused.

Basically, can I switch back to the stock rom and record videos and switch back to CM9 without losing anything ?

Yes, just don't do the quick switch or whatever. CM9 will remain on the /preinstall partition and SS will back up it's data, then restore your main system's data. If you switch and somehow screw this up and fast swap, fast swap once more back to CM9 and do the slow, complete process.

well shux.. I disabled safe mode fine and went back to my stock rom.. I'm not sure if this is where I messed up but I opened the market and downloaded some apps (and also it upgraded to the google play crap) and then I went back to safestrap and enabled safe mode again to go back to CM9.
Now I am having trouble with the Play store. When I try to download anything it says 'error proccessing purchase'..
also I noticed that when I first installed CM9, my device name changed from DROID 3 to XT0-whatever its called on the google play website.
and since i just disabled/enabled safemode it has turned back to DROID 3.
If I try to get an app from the store online and send to DROID 3 device, nothing happens on my phone.

What do?? I deleted the data/cache of the play app.. i'm gonna try a reboot

edit: reboot no bueno

Tried to remove my google account from the stock rom, said I have to do a Factory Reset in order to remove it. Can I do that? Won't that mess up safestrap and cm9 and stuff?
I just want to download apps again.. phone is pretty useless if you cant download apps :'(

Wait so u cant download apps on either Rom????? or just cm9?

It finally started working again.. I was only able to download apps on the stock rom (unsafe mode).
It started letting me get apps again though on CM9 (safe mode)
I really don't understand what happened.

Well in order to download apps properly you have to have installed the google apps add-on during the flashing of cm9. Otherwise it wouldnt work
