Root Help with steps after rooting

Hello everyone,

so I've successfully rooted my phone and I would like to start playing with ROM's/Themes but I want to go about it the right way so that I'm able to go back to stock in case I need to.

I have read a lot of posts and everyone recommends that you do a backup of your phone while its still stock ( Its rooted of coarse, I don't know if that changes anything)

So again, I ask, what are the steps I need to take in order to do this correctly and be able to go back to stock in case I have to????

My main reasons for rooting are:

Deleting all the junk
conserving battery
wifi hotspot ( which I now have since I'm rooted)
and playing with the ROMS/themes

I would also like to know if there are app stores where you can get things for free
websites where you can DL movies for free

Thanks in advanced- Again, I am trying to read up on this but everyone seems to have a diff. way of doing things and I'm not sure whats best for me

I have a motorola droid X version 2.2.1

P.S. I keep reading about different roms and how they're cool and stuff but where do I go to see what the ROM's look like? is there a website that has them listed with pictures of how they look once installed?

1) If you have to go back to stock just sbf. Google Droid X SBF. Or look here.
2) Alternate App store = Applanet, Although I do suggest paying for good apps.
3) The best ROM I have come across is Apex 1.3.1. Look at this thread and this website. I also hear GummyJAR is good.

Make sure you have the latest and greatest everything by visiting this thread.
