How do I root my s4 I'm new to this and want to know if I should or go for it I know I'm in the way late train but can someone help me.

The easiest way I think is to use "CF auto root" http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ just type CF auto root galaxy s4 in Google and you'll find many step by step guides. It's actually very easy to do, I can do the whole thing in under a minute, just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

Which carrier are you on in the US, or are you an international user?

Its a AT&T phone but my carrier is cricket
