Help Hero 1.5 - save contacts (VcardI/O?)

tempsc

Newbie
Hi. I've just been upgraded to galaxy s2 and need to get my contacts off the my Hero to it.

After browsing around, I've found the vcardio app and downloaded it. Problem is that I don't know where 'contact's are saved on my phone when trying to navigate which files to save to sd card.

The S2 has a menu to 'import vcf files from sd card' but the hero doesn't make it so easy to save them to it in the first place! I have 527 google contacts and 43 phone contacts. Are they saved in different places? In fact, I can't find 'contacts' at all - they are listed on the phone screen as 'People' I think?

Finally, phone won't synch with my pc so solutions in that direction will be a bit of a problem.

Any advice would be apreciated.

Tks

Your Google contacts aren't a problem as they will sync with your new handset (provided you use the same Google account on both).

For Phone contacts, open People and select Menu then Import/Export. Choose Export to SD followed by the Phone account, and you should end up with a .VCF on your microSD card that can be imported into the GS2.

Thanks Slug. Two queries..

1. I monitor 4 gmail email accts on my Hero at the moment. Does the figure of 527 include all contacts over the 4 alternative accts? I assume they all become 'google contacts'?

2. Following yr instructions, when I soft press menu, the six options are; New contact, Search people, delete contacts, View, Import and Sync exchange contacts. Unfortunately, there is no option to export too.

Referring back to my other query. Could I just save all the contacts, ie google + phone to my sd card using the vcardIO app? I guess I would need to know how todril down to the folders where such info is saved on the phone though?

If you've got 527 contacts in People that are shown as "Google contacts" then yes. :) I only have one Gmail account so I can't be of much more help, I'm afraid.

Bollox... that option must be in a later version. :(

Try a long-press on a contact - does that show an Export option?

Two problems I can see with that. One, you'll confuse the heck out of Google/Gmail and possibly end up with hundreds of dupes as it tries to sync. Second, I haven't a clue where the contacts database is located or even is it's accessible. :o

Thanks Slug.

Long press on a contact just brings up call/delete/edit contact + send contact as vcard. Not sure what that means and where it would be sent to and how (SMS/email?) Would I have to manually send contacts on a singular basis?

I think the google contacts option is the favoured one and assume that wil synch once I have set up the google acct on the new phone. The phone contacts I'm not sure about? Can I save them to the sim and then insert the old sim into the new phone and import into the new phone?

This is getting complicated!

Cheers

Either I believe, plus Bluetooth.

Doing it that way, yes.

That's what I love about it - provided you use the same Google account your contacts are sync'd across multiple handsets plus Gmail via desktop browsers, so you can access them from any device with a 'net connection.

Yes, but there should also be an option to convert each to a Google contact (maybe in the "edit" option?) Why go to the hassle of maintaining two different locations? ;)
