Hero 2.1 Upgrade Question

Is clearing out the SD card something that most people do on a regular basis? And exactly how would you go about it?

My Hero is very laggy. But I just put up with it (although very annoying!!) because I like the phone so much. If 2.1 fixes the lags, I will be a VERY happy camper!! :p
use less widgets and you need a task killer. ignore everything Google and mail, messages, anything important for the phone even if you dont know what its for. I only use 3 screens. I use estrong task manager try that. Im hoping they come out with an update for 2.1 soon. After April 1, im rooting.

I'm rooted and ran Fresh 1.1 for several months. It ran faster and had better battery life with no lag than the ruu for Sprint. I have Damages 2.1 rom on now and it is still very fast. As said earlier everything but the visual voice mail works. The options are more abundant and I actually think it may be faster. Battery life may not be as good but I'm still tweeking and holding out to see for sure.

Battery not as good as your 1.1 Rom or the current 1.6?

I don't use a task killer because of what I learned here: http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/26997-task-managers-your-hero.html

I am only using 3 screens and I use spare parts to monitor usage, etc. I am assuming that my lag issue is on par with everyone else's who hasn't rooted. I was just curious about the "clearing out the SD card" thing.

OK, good to know. My main reason for not rooting is this: if something goes wrong, I am not techy enough to fix it. I know just enough to keep the phone running stock. And I can trouble shoot with help. But I am getting the idea that rooting is for users with more advanced knowledge, yes?

Rooting is so easy, a caveman could do it! (couldn't resist).

If something goes wrong, chances are very good someone here has had the same problem before, and would be willing to help. There's not a whole lot you can break that's unfixable with a couple methods. Basically, almost anything but radio updates can be un-done, either with nandroid backups or the RUU program. Nandroid backups restore a previous setup, and RUU puts your phone back to the way it was out of the box. Neither does anything with the stuff on your SD card, so that's safe

So I emailed htc to ask them about the performance issues on the hero. I asked if 2.1 will address any of the lag issues. I'll paraphrase the anything but helpful response. Basically, they don't know. I'm only hoping that if these rooted roms are running faster the official will too. However I was a bit dissapointed that HTC has no knowledge on whether this new update will address problems they should be dealing with. They are the ones with the final touch on the firmware..

Correction: the HTC rep(s) involved in the email conversation don't know. I guarantee someone at HTC -- most likely in R&D or development or its equivalent -- is aware of how the official 2.1 ROM will affect performance. The problem is that the people who do know don't work in customer relations or marketing.

A friend of mine at sprint loaded It on my hero yesterday and it is smooth and fixed all the problems I was having except flash is still an issue.
