Help Hero as MP3 player

I have been searching for a mp3 player for my kids, something similar to an ipod touch, but I would much rather go android than apple. I tried the archos 28 and it was horrible, even after upgrading to froyo, so I returned them. My question is: What do you guys think about using a hero as a standalone mp3/media player? You can get them for about 80-100 bucks online, and even without service, you have a great camera, a media player, and access to the market thru wifi. Do you think this sounds feasible? I just cant see paying $200 + each for an ipod touch for my 3 kids. Let me know what you think, and maybe suggestions for better media player apps. Im currently leaning towards double twist.

sound like a really good idea. There are some good music player apps too. Plus, if you want them to be able to text where there is wifi, they can use google voice...DO you need data to log into the first activation screen?

You don't need data on startup. However, I would like to ask what's wrong with Apple? Especially for kids, iPod is probably more user friendly. If you can find Heroes on EBay, you can find an older iPod Touch with comparable specs for the same price. Ipods are better for games.

I wager he is going to reply with that the problem is the higher price. If you want a base Apple iPod Touch 4G, you are looking at over $200.00 for only 8 GB of space.

You can probably score a used Apple iPod Touch 3G for mid $100.00s though. However, then you will not have expandable storage space, a camera, and a few other things you could get for the price of a used Sprint HTC Hero, which would still be quite a bit less than the aforementioned Apple iPod Touch.

exactly. i have 3 kids who love to play on my phone, and me and my wife have heros, so we are going to upgrade to evos and give the kids our heros. so i only have to buy one more. a couple of sd cards and cases and they have an awesome mp3 player and camera without breaking the bank. thank you for reaffirming my idea.

Ever since I got my Hero, I have forgotten about my iPod lol. I love listening to music on my phone, and ever more now that I have found PowerAmp, the only music player with a built-in equalizer! =]. This app is free for the first 15 days, I think, then you have to buy the key which is $4.99, but it's worth it! It's the best music player out of the rest in the market, and what makes it better, just the built-in EQ :)

PowerAMP – Music Player for Android

After I got my Hero I upgraded to a 16gb card. I have about 2000 songs on my Hero now, with room to spare. I use PowerAmp as the player, its free or $4.99 for the upgraded version. I don't use my ipod much anymore as PowerAmp does all I need in an MP3 player. I also purchased a Motorola device that lets me stream music to my car stereo via bluetooth. The music stops when a call comes in and resumes after I have finished my conversation. I can also hook up the Hero to my computer speakers via the headphone jack at work and listen to music as I choose.

It's a great idea/alternative & save some $ too.I always try to think outside the box,it usually pays off & if you think about it theres usually many ways to accomplish a desirable outcome.Good post.

I upgraded from my Hero to an Evo last month. I was using an old 4gig iPod mini for listening to music at work but the battery is about trash in it (dead after 3 hours). Since i bought an 8gig memory card for the Hero a few months ago, I decided to use it as my iPod replacement. IT WORKS GREAT!! After 9 hours of playing music it still has 60% battery left. Plus with wifi I still have access to the market.

this was a great idea. the kids love them. I recycled my wifes old hero (she got an evo) and bought one off ebay for 100 bucks with a bunch of accessories. my other son is getting mine next week when my upgrade is in. rooted them, put on ASOP's froyo rom, added voip with sipdroid and google voice and loaded them with music. They are thrilled. I will check out Power Amp because i am not all that thrilled with the stock music app or doubletwist

i will try to give a quick rundown. it involves a little bit of setup.

First, go to VoIP PBX - 30-day free trial - move your phones to the cloud and register for a free line. (they will only give out california phone #'s so I use Google Voice to get a local #)

make sure you get your sipgate credentials, you will need them later

Second, get number from Google Voice. In order to activate it, you will have to forward it to another phone in order to enter validation code.

Next, download 2 free apps from the market, Sipdroid, and GV Callback.
Setup sipdroid using the credentials you got from sipgate. you should get a green dot in your notification bar if everything is working properly. you can now use it to make calls, but they would all show your california sip #, so i use the GV callback app to route the calls thru google voice. you just run the app and it syncs with your GV account. now when you make a call, it will run it thru GV, and call you back before initiating the call. (just like making a call from your computer using google voice, if your familiar with that). Its a little confusing at first, but it works once you get it all setup.

I just wrote this off the top of my head, so if you have any questions, or i forgot something, let me know. Maybe I will do a full write up on it later.
