Help Hero not making sound

A family member's new HTC Hero was activated yesterday, and we have just found that it plays no sound... at all... It does not ring, make tones while dialing, play sound with media, or anything. Volume is obviously on and settings are set to have volume. Could I be missing something?

Edit: It's the speaker that is not working at all. I assume it is just hardware failure?

download an app called volume manager and turn everything all the way up then reset phone and when you.turn phone.back on see if you have sound.

I occurred to me to plug in some headphones, and voila, there was sound. SO what could be wrong with the speakers?

I'm bumping this because I have the same problem. No sound with anything. . . but I can hear it if I plug in headphones. Volumes are all the way up, I rebooted the phone to make sure nothing had gotten turned off. I had a phone conversation with someone yesterday. . .

NCcase, what did you do?
