Help Hero Notification Strategies

Newbie
Okay, I've been using this device for over a year and a half, and I still haven't ever quite figured this out. Having come from a Blackberry, where this stuff was dead simple, it's sort of annoying, so I hope someone can share a strategy.

I'd like for this device to handle all the various notifications better. It seems that there's a convoluted mess of settings for email, ringtones, sms, alarms, countdown timers and all of them overlap with each other and single settings verses system settings. Add to that my own personal need for the device to be silent at times, louder at others, and have different loudnesses for different functions.

The closest I've ever got is using an app called Sound Manager to manage things, but even that has me befuddled most of the time. So, rather than going into all my attempted and failed strategies, here's what I'd like the device to do:

Phone rings:
Not at all between 10:30pm and 6:30am on weekdays, 11:30pm and 9am weekends. The volume has to be loud at all times, except 9-5 on weekdays, when I'm in the office and it can be softer (rather than the super loud it has to be to get my attention when in my coat pocket).

SMS/Google Talk:
Same rules for middle of the night, always loud when on, but different sound so I can differentiate it from a phone call.

Alarms:
Always loud, always on.

Reminders from Google Calendar:
Always on, loud during the day, soft otherwise.

Countdown timers:
Loud. Whenever set.

The blackberry made the off stuff easy as it turned itself on and off at night without asking me, and would wake for alarms but nothing else. I won't hope that Android will do that anytime soon.

If someone can help me to untangle this mess, I'd truly be thankful. For some reason, I can never get this right.

Cheers!

There's an app called 'Tasker' that you might want to check out, (although it is a paid app).

You can have it change the ringer volume according to day/time. Same goes for notification volume. Then if you make sure you have SMS, GTalk and your ringtone all as separate sounds you can differentiate between them (set their sounds in each apps' own settings, not in the general settings).

I think the option to have alarms sound even in silent mode is just a standard option in the general settings. Mine has always done that. Countdown timers should be the same.

The google calendar notifications have to be the same as SMS/Gtalk so far as I'm aware, because all notifications fall under that same volume.

I got the app in the hope it'll do what I need it to do. I haven't had a chance to play around too much, but on a tentative look, it seems like it'll do everything, but I haven't got the foggiest clue how to make it do what I need. I fear this one's got a heck of complex learning curve. Hopefully, it'll work out.

Thank you for responding with good advice!

I am going *INSANE*.

I want to do something as simple as change my icon using this Tasker app, and I downloaded the icons, ad I am told to place them into the /sdcard/Tasker/.icn/ folder.

I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIND IT OR CREATE IT.

can't create .icn in Tasker on the sdcard because starting with . is verboten. Furthermore, the icons downloaded to tasker don't appear to be anywhere on the SD card. I will be gang buggered by trolls if I can figure out how to simply copy files to a directory.

Is it because I use a Mac?

I have used computers for 25 years. Now I cannot copy a folder where it needs to go.

AAAAUGH!

How are you trying to create the folder? I can imagine windows or mac os kicking up a stink about a folder starting with a full stop, but you should be able to do it through the phone (with a file manager like astro).

I just checked and I already had /sdcard/tasker/.ico and I could create new folders starting with a full stop with astro.

I don't have any experience with macs, but it may be that you already have the folder but your mac isn't displaying it.
