Help Hero to EVO 3D

Hunter11

Newbie
The wife and I have been using Heros for the last two years and upgraded yesterday. I am getting a EVO 3D and she a iPhone 4s. My question may be dumb but what would be the easiest way for me to transfer my contacts from the Hero to the new 3D? Can the SD cards be swapped to move them over? I should get the new phone about mid week and want to have all my ducks in a row before I get it. Any other suggestions on the new phone other than making sure it has the latest updates once I get it? I have already ordered an Otterbox Defender case for it. Thanks in advance.

Make sure that your contacts are saved on Google, then when you switch to the 3VO then your contacts will be there once you sign in to Gmail

Also before you do the updates, if you decide you may want to root down the road, you may want to check your HBoot first to see if it is 1.50 or 1.40, will make your life easier if you root if it is on HBoot 1.4, but I doubt it will be, but you never know.

You are going to love the jump to something great and newer.

If you don't want to use any other 3rd party accounts/applications (Google account, HTC Sync, Market application, etc.):

Try going into the 'People' application and hitting menu, and then Import/Export. It will make a vCard file of all your contacts and put it on your SD card. I'm not positive you can do this on the Hero, but I'm pretty sure it is the same. Then on the Evo 3D, when you go to set it up with your cleaned SD card, go into People and hit menu and Import. It will find the file anywhere on the SD card and you can select it to import to your new phone.

As far as the SD card goes. You can probably just do a straight swap if you want to. But if it was me I would make a back up on the computer, format the card and put it in the new phone with nothing on it.
It will set up some default android files. Then copy files from your computer back ups to the newly built SD card, only bringing over files that you know what they are and why they are necessary.
You'll also probably want to back up the files from the new SD card that ships inside the Evo 3D (default 3D pictures, Green Hornet 3D movie, default music files, etc.) and go through the process of integrating ALL the files onto one formatted defaulted file system card.

Getting a new phone is a great time to do some spring cleaning of the SD card and files. Also a great time update or start your back up on your PC. Keep a copy of your data, especially the vCard file, on the PC in case something ever goes awry.

Another question, my contacts under "people" on the Hero are not syncing to Gmail. I validated I have everything selected to sync to Gmail. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

I'm not sure how you could sync to Gmail through People. But the People app can export data. Hit menu then Import/Export and export to the SD card. You can transfer that file to your PC and import that into your GMail address through a browser. You can even import that on the Evo 3D.

If it was me I wouldn't even bother with gmail, but some people like the convenience/inconvenience that storing things on the internet brings.

I would use the process I outlined in my post above and just export to the SD card. Then import from the SD card onto the new phone.

However, If you want to use gmail as an extra backup option, I would log out of your gmail account on the phone and log back in. If you haven't logged out in forever or been forced to enter the security key it maybe has not sync-ed in some time.
Also you can try using the force sync button in Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> Manage accounts -> the little grey circle with two rotating arrows

You can also go into people and make sure that all contacts are listed to the linked phone book. When you enter new contacts it allows you to choose if they are phone only or linked to other locations - like google.
Go into people and hit the little down arrow header seen in the picture below. (it is rather hidden and easy to miss).

There should be a phone list and a linked list or something like that. By default it usually show All.

Also if you look on each contacts vCard in the upper right hand corner there is a little chain link pictogram that depicts whether it is linked anywhere or not.

You can click there and it will show you specifically if it is linked anywhere.

I'm not sure on the exact process, and 'People' might look different on the Hero, but I hope I am pointing you in a direction that will help you out.

(thanks htcevo3dtips.com for the pictures. Googled 'htc people' and borrowed them for our purposes)

Thanks guys. I just exported the "people contacts' to my PC and when the new phone gets here this afternoon I will import them into it. I am really looking forward to moving up to the 3D.

Maybe after you get the Evo set up with your current phone book from the SD card you can try a fresh start with your gmail. Maybe clear all the contacts off your gmail account, and then relink your entire phone book from the Evo 3D to your gmail account? Should make for a nice clean transfer.
Then after that whenever you add new contacts to your phone just make sure when prompted you tell them to be linked and not phone only.

Let us know how it goes, and if you have any other questions :)

The evo 3d comes stock with an app called "transfer" and all your contacts will be transferred through bluetooth, it worked with my palm treo pro without a problem and it was easy.

Just to report back the new phone is up and working and all my contacts are moved over to it. It did do one update last night. Here is the software information after the update, does this look good?

Android Version

HTC Sense Version

Software Number

Congratulations! I just upgraded from Hero to 3vo last week and am loving it. I know you will too. Somehow I lucked out and got an hboot 1.3, which is fabulous for me as I wanted to root...just makes it easier.

Enjoy your new 3vo!
