Hi there!

Hi,
I'm new to Android phones. I have unix shell experience and would like to learn as much as possible, especially how to configure android on my HTC G2 running 2.3.4, I think.

For starters I read a post here that says that in order to remove apps that are pre-installed I need to remove their .apk from the /??/?? directory.
It goes on to say I need to be rooted.

So that would be the first question - how do I get rooted? I will ask in the forums as this is just a "hello" post. But you see I am already chomping at the bit to get into the inner workings and make this phone do what I want it to, and *nothing* else, thank you very much.

Best,

Welcome to our AndroidForums, needsleep :).

Yeah, for the most part, in order to remove pre-installed apps, you need to be rooted to do so (although on some devices you can go to your Settings app and in the App or Applications section, choose the app in question and see if it will let you Disable it (easy thing to check)).

It looks like we have a couple of areas that have "G2" in their name, but I'm hoping / guessing that you have a T-Mobile G2? If so, this should be your proper all-things-root area for you to get help with your rooting questions:

By the way, be careful in what apps you remove--some are vital to the functioning of the operating system. Also, its best to disable (or "freeze") them vs. actually removing or renaming--they are much easier to restore if/when needed (i.e., you'll need to restore them to their original state prior to being able to successfully install an over-the-air (OTA) Android update).

Cheers and best of luck!
