Help Hidden SSID causing WiFi connection issues

sannesley

Newbie
After recieving a new router from my ISP a couple of weeks ago I've had to configure the SSID as hidden to allow my laptop to connect wirelessly to it. The laptop runs Vista and if I leave the SSID un-hidden Vista thinks it is a public network and no matter what I try it restricts me to local access only. Once the SSID is hidden the laptop connects no problem.

Once the SSID is hidden my Desire cannot connect to my network or even see it. So by fixing the laptop problem I create a problem with connecting the Desire to my WiFi network,

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem or found a workaround or solution for it?

You have to manually create connection or temporarily allow SSID broadcast to set up connection. You will also need to get an app from the marketplace called HiddenSSID and enter your SSID into it.

I.have hidden ssid. You have to manually create it. You've done that I assume?

I have manually created my SSID when the network is hidden. When I do this it still cannot see the network . It says below the network "not in range, remembered" even though I'm sitting right beside the router so there is no issue with signal strength.

I temporarily broadcast the SSID and the Desire connected no problem. I downloaded WiFi analyzer and Hidden SSID enabler from the Android market.

With the SSID hidden and the network turned on WiFi analyzer cannot pick up my network. With Hidden SSID enabler I type in the SSID of my network when I have the WiFi turned on on the phone to no effect. It does not connect me to my WiFi network.

The only thing I can put it down to is some sort of incompatability between the router and the phone. The phone is running Android 2.2 if that is any help. :(

When I was stock I got that not in range message.

I used to have to modify then save with no alterations to pick up. But this is after its been connected before.

That vista issue is odd too.

What router are you folks running? As I've said I think it's an incompatablity with the router. Mine is made by a company called Huawei who I've never heard of before. I know it doesn't mean that the hardware they produce is crap but I'd be more inclined to trust brand names I've heard of like Belkin or Netgear.

You can change the network location type in Vista.

Changing the Network Location Type in Windows Vista

I've tried that every time that this problem appears. I change the network to private and it has no effect on the connection issue. If it means anything it reports my network as an unidentified network?

The more I think about it it appears from posts that Vista on the laptop is acting funny and as regards network properties and I might look into upgrading the OS to Windows 7.

The wife has an HTC Wildfire and the hidden SSID is not allowing her phone to connect either. I think the connection issue must lie with the router as its odd that 2 phones would exhibit the same problem

Thought my ohone was working fine with hidden SSID, but was just tinkering and found I'd unhidden it, probably that party 6 moths ago!
Anyway, I hid it again, and could no longer connect. 'Advanced Config Editor' ficed it for me, thanks.

Must be a 2.2 'Feature', cos it sure as hell was working on 2.1.

Works fine on mine

Seems Android has some 'issues' with hidden SSIDs.

One of the entries mentions this app as providing a solution.

WiFi Advanced Config Editor - Android app on AppBrain

Which might help

I checked the Hidden SSID box on the WiFi Advanced Config Editor and still not working. Everything else in the house works with it. 2 PC, 2 Laptops, 2 TiVo HD boxes, 1 WiFi AP/Gateway, Wife's iPhone, Wii, PS3.

If I broadcast the SSID it will pick it up quickly, and it will stay connected w/o broadcasting the SSID until I disconnect (i.e. leave the house, go to work, you know normal activity you'd expect w/ a phone.)
