Help Hiding Gmail Contacts in Messaging

I know how to make only the Contacts saved to the phone show up in the main screen (using Display Options), but when I Compose a new text message and select the icon to choose who to send it to, all my gmail contacts show up. Is there a way to hide them, not have them show up? I already unchecked options in Settings / Accounts and Sync / Manage Accounts / Sync Contacts. It didn't do anything. I just want just the phone contacts to show up when I use the messaging option. Not the gmail contacts.
