Help High Background Data Use

I upgraded from a Hero to a Sensation a few months ago. With the Hero, I had a package that included 500Mb a month, which I struggled to use all of. I had two twitter apps running (work and personal account) which updated every ten minutes, and four email accounts using the HTC Mail app, set to receive emails automatically. I only occasionally used it for web browsing/Youtube etc, so I figured the twitter and email accounts didn't eat into the data allowance so much.

Now I have 1Gb a month with the Sensation, and the same setup as I had with the Hero - the same four email accounts in the mail app, and the same two twitter apps. With background data enabled, I'm getting through anywhere between 40 and 60Mb a day (I use 3G Watchdog and Orange's "Your Orange" app, both of which seem to match pretty closely), without any web browsing or use beyond the email/twitter thing.

If I disable background data, then the email accounts won't automatically receive any mail - I have to constantly go into the accounts and refresh each inbox separately in order to not miss emails.

What is so different about the Sensation from the Hero that causes it to randomly eat shedloads of my precious monthly allowance?

And while I'm on an email gripe, the "Mail@" app gets emails from my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts as soon as they're sent, regardless of whether background data is on or off, and the Gmail app flatly refuses to do the same whether background data is on or off. And when I do open Gmail and refresh it, I have to do it two or three times before I actually get an updated inbox.

Anybody got any ideas to prevent me setting fire to the thing and hurling it through the window? ;-)

Check what you've got set to sync and how frequently under settings > accounts and sync. Also check whether you've applications in the market set to auto update?

I typically used around 5-600 MB in a month with most things syncing frequently with the exception of apps like stocks or news
