Help High cell standby usage....

Last week my phone was getting incredible battery life. Since I dont use it much (except for the occasional call/text/angry birds playing), I was close to 3 days on a full charge and still had about 10% left.

Ever since I recharged it from that day, though, Im getting horrible battery life.

I checked the battery usage under Settings -> About Phone, and the biggest drain is cell standby at 37% (!!!) Judging from other battery life posts around here, 37% is really high. I clicked the Cell Standby item and it showed 11% time without signal.

Is that the culprit? Im wondering what was different last week with much better life than now. I was out and about a bit last week, I wonder if maybe I just happened to be in a good signal area, vs at home where maybe Im not getting that great a signal?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you hit it on the head yourself!

for what it's worth I notice the same thing with my phone. it seems like I get much better battery life when I go to visit my parents. I live in the sticks and they live in a much more populated city.

I just checked my battery usage and my time without signal is at 48%!!!

I didn't realize it was that bad. We seem to be having issues at our house lately (even prior to getting the Fascinate) where our coverage is very spotty. We must be in sort of a dead zone and I just never realized how much my service goes in and out.

I'm not understanding this. My phone shows cell standby at 61%, and Time without a signal at 92%. Yet I've never had any trouble making or receiving calls.

How does one interpret this?

Yea, I am starting to wonder this as well too. I have never really had a problem making or receiving calls but I do know it goes in and out once in a while in certain spots of my house, but not 50% of the time. It must use some strange threshold value to determine "without a signal."

Count me in as someone who gets similar, cell standby is like 37% and 46% without signal, I know that is impossible...I live in NYC area and we have excellent signal everywhere

I think one problem is signal reporting. I don't know how many people that have commented are on dj05 but mine used to say a much higher number before going to dj05

actually i just updated to dj05 about 2 days ago, i don't know what it was before i updated never really checked. It might have been a lot worst.

dj05 did fix a lot of other stuff

hmm i checked battery meter in my house and I get from -88 t0 -94

I woke up this morning and it says 87% without signal, while standby is 47%

I unplugged it last night around 11 pm, roughly 6.5 hours agao and now down to 82% battery

Something is wrong

I am on stock software. Time without signal 0%. The other day when I was at my buddy's house near the lake it was about 12%.

The radio in this thing is obviously not on par with other devices. I have owned the D1, the INC now the SF. I was around 4% with the Incredible for time without signal, and I am around 48-55% with the fascinate, with an average of 1 bar for signal if I am lucky. I know this does not always correlate to your call signal

This still baffles me on how they calculate Time without Signal. My percentage is way too high. I get decent battery life I suppose so I am not sure it has a huge impact on me, but it is kind of annoying to see that high of a number. The screen is always the thing that drains the most battery for me anyway (right now it is at like 60% of the battery use), but I would like to know what they consider time without signal because there are very few times that I truly have no signal.

EDIT: I am in the process of trying something right now to see if it works. Apparently if you turn on Airplane Mode and then turn it off it basically resets the radio and you will see the time without signal drop significantly. Apparently a lot of the Epic owners have this "issue" too. I was at 69% time without signal before toggling airplane mode so I will see what it drops to. (It has already dropped to 66% after a couple minutes)

i have an lg optimus, however i am experiencing the same issues. my current cell standby useage is at 79%! unbelievable!!!! my time without a signal says 80% and i generally get around 2-3 bars. can anyone help me????

I have a stock Fascinate (EA28) and I am at 49% "Time Without A Signal". Time on 4h 47m and it's down to 70% battery. Fluctuating between 1 and 2 bars.

Just watching my screen and the 3G icon is constantly performing an Uploading/Upload&Download/Upload&Download sequence. I've noticed when ever the signal bars change, the above sequence happens.

The OpenSignal application reports the Signal Strength bouncing between 28% and 42%. It even gets bumped down to 1x from 3G.

I went to a corporate Verizon Wireless store this week to see if I could get some answers to why my phone's "Time without a signal" percentage is so high, which is causing poor battery life. The rep. took my phone for awhile. He said he updated the PRL version and to give it a try. I immediately went to the "Time without a signal" details and it was around 16% even after he rebooted the phone and while the phone was in the middle of the store with all those signal boosters. :-)

He took the phone again and talked to another rep. He came back and told me they are going to replace the phone. The replacement should arrive today, so we'll see if this fixes the issue. I am guessing not. I've seen other threads mention issues with the Fascinate antenna, If this is true and unless Samsung has updated the Fascinate's hardware, this will continue to be the issue with this model of phone.

Currently at "Time on" = 52m and "Time without a signal" = 64%

I received my replacement Fascinate yesterday. The condition of the phone looked "new".

I went through the reactivation process, re-installed some of my applications and adjusted the OS settings(refresh, sync).

Currently at "Time on" = 3h 27m and "Time without a signal" = 33% and battery down to 87%

Looks like the replacement hardware didn't fix the issue. I'm also in a major city where coverage should be high.

I'm going to let it go over the weekend to see how the battery lasts.

Yesterday I went to the corporate Verizon Wireless store again. I showed them that my replacement phone was still having signal issues with a 46% "Time without a signal".

There were two VZ reps that also had the Fascinate and one had "Time without a signal" at 50% and the other had 3%. They did some web searches and found a bunch of articles about the "Fascinate" and "poor signal". They were stumped. The manager said he was going to do some research and get back to me, since he also had a Fascinate.

I did a SpeedTest from inside the store and got the following results:

D/L - 245kbps
U/L - 158kbps

They were shocked, because the store has a cell repeater installed.

We'll see what happens next.
