High Quality Car Charger?

I'm looking for a high quality car charger for my new Galaxy Nexus. I've used several cheap ones with older Android phones, and I noticed that many car chargers generate an annoying noise when playing audio (Pandora, MP3s, Google Navigation) through an aux input to the car stereo.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a specific car charger? I'd like to order one today/tomorrow so I can have it by Thursday (long drive for Christmas).

I regret to inform you that all chargers will create white noise while charging. The best solution for this is to start with a fully charged battery and keep screen off as much as possible to keep battery fully charged. Some phones will not generate the white noise if you have charger plugged in while the battery is not in phone. I have not heard if this is true on GNEX.

This may not be helpful to you but may be to others, thought I'd place it here.

For those who have USB inputs in their cars, I was pleased to learn that pluggin in the USB cord would charge the phone. My previous phone would not charge when plugged to USB.

Haven't tried USB + audio yet, so can't comment on the noise.

aguillon5, not to start a fight, but first off, it's not white noise. Second off, I don't believe you. Third, I'm an electrical engineer, with experience designing USB devices and voltage converters, so I actually do know what I'm talking about (exterior to the phone, at least).

I haven't ripped my chargers apart (too lazy so far) but I'm guessing they're using cheap switching dc-dc converters, which can and generally do generate noise. It's not white noise though, that'd be full spectrum. Switching converters will generate noise over a pretty specific frequency, though with harmonics and other phenomenon, it's possible for this to be pretty wide. What I'm curious about is if anyone is specifically selling a "no-noise car charger" designed specifically to allow Android (or other) smartphones to charge in the car while still maintaining a high quality audio output.

If no one sells one, maybe I'll just build one myself. I doubt it's too hard, unless Samsung is doing something crazy in the phone that's generating the noise. If that's the case, then yes, you're right, and we're all well hosed. I don't think Samsung is that dumb though, if you're designing a high end piece of equipment it's fairly trivial to ensure there's no noise bleed through. Of course, when you add in fly-by-night car chargers, all bets are off.

If no one knows of a "high end" car charger that will not have noise then maybe I should go build one myself. I imagine it'd sell pretty well, I can't be the only one who wants this.

Hey trophy did you ever double check?

I have a Griffin Powerjolt charger and it shows USB current when charging. I actually found this thread looking for a good alternative to the Griffin one.

It would be nice to know if Trophy has a newer version that charges as AC...

yeah sorry guys. I did double check but i've been busy this weekend. It does show USB. I could have swore that it showed AC. That stinks cause now i don't want it lol. I mean it still charges fine i did a test last night and in about 15 minutes it charged it about 10%.

oh well

I had my nexus hooked up to the home AC charger that came with the phone today. I noticed that it was taking Forever to charge. I pulled up the settings and WTF...It showed USB. I don't get it. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Now it's charging like it's supposed to.

trophy you can hack it, so it charges as A/C, that's what I'm going to do to mine :P

There a pic on Amazon on how to do it.

The issue is according to USB specs. "chargers" should have the middle two pins shorted. This is what tells the device to charge at the higher amperage.

Disclaimer: doing the above will void your warranty and and like any modification you're responsible for anything you break :P

Yes, This ^^ . Just pop it open, and at the connection where the 4 wires come into the USB port, dab a little solder on the middle two connections to bridge them. Works like a charm and doesn't (so far hasn't, at least) overheat (which was my concern).

Now I can actually use navigation on long-ish road trips without arriving with a mostly dead battery.

i usually buy the OEM one from the carrier. i have a Sprint OEM micro USB car charger that i've had for almost 2 years with no problems. it had good build quality and i like the long coiled cord. i also bought two OEM carrier travel chargers. my thoughts were that they should know what chargers are best for their own phones and if something goes wrong or it damages my phone or doesn't work right i can always take it back to them and raise hell. not cheap but worth it for me.

yeah you can go that route but you can get an equally good charger on amazon for much cheaper. Actually you can most likely get the exact same charger that the carrier offers cheaper on amazon. I know they sell the 30 Moto charger that i had for a while for 5$ on ebay all day long.

can you post the link? Thanks a ton bud.

Just my $.02 but you guys that are willing to "hack" a charger by soldering a couple pins together and then plugging it in to your $700 baby to see if it FRIES it or not, all just to save $5 on Amazon....y'all are some crazy mofo's!

Depends on your comfort level. I've been doing amateur electronics for 20 years.

I put this at about the "safest" hack there is. You're more likely to drop phone and break it.

Off course I'm the type that cracked the dash or my old 99 Neon open and modified it so the A/C wouldn't automatically come on when it the defroster was selected :P

My "main" reason for doing it is two fold, first I wanted a charger with 2 USB ports. Second I already ordered it so I can either "fix" this one or spend hours trying and find a 2 port charger that is already correct...
