There is a light detector up near the the ear speaker that detects when it is dark and lights up the buttons. Generally you can cover that detector and get them to light up.
Actually the ambient light sensor is on the front of the phone. It's on the left side of the Verizon logo. Besides, it wouldn't make sense to put the light sensor on the back of the phone

I didn't say it was on the back of the phone. I said it was near the ear speaker which is also near the verizon logo. There is more than one speaker you know.
