Root Home and Search Button Fault?

Hi,

I have this button issue with my HTC desire. When I try to press the home button, it doesn't work and just makes the screen flash, and when I try to press the search button, it doesn't do ANYTHING. I had this issue with my previous mobile (Which was also a HTC Desire), however, that one had had some water damage, so that was understandable, however, this one is BRAND NEW, and has had NO other issues. I recently put a Vodafone ROM on there because I didn't like the 3 one, is that a possible cause?

Thanks in advance...:)

P.S. I know this has nothing to do with with rooting, but when I posted this in the other section no one replied...

Boot into recovery. Under Advanced there is a key test function (if using clockwork - I don't know Amon-Ra). That would let you check whether it is hardware or not.

hardware problem, you should have got it replaced rather than change the rom

Sorry for the late reply. Yes I do have ClockWork, so I'll check the advanced key test function.

Sorry for being late again. I tried it and it didn't work, a few days later I switched my phone off and on, and left it on for over 6 hours with SIM lock and phone lock on, and when I unlocked it on both it started working, and worked for a whole day, then went back to normal the next day. What should I do?

It all sounds like software to me. But without your current set up and details its hard to troubleshoot.

The problem loading widget sounds liek a "move to SD" card issue. Did you manually move them anywhere? is your SD partitioned? What custom rom are you on? Did you have any issues when rooting?

Tell me everything.

Yes, I moved the applications to my SD card manually with "Move2SD Enabler (Root Only)". I did notice it started it right after. No, my SD card is not partitioned. I am using a Vodafone ROM (The phone was previously a 3 ROM holder). And no, I had no issues when rooting.

Anything else you need to know?

i have this problem too, however i find to solve my issue i manually lock the phone then unlock it and the home button will work fine then until i reboot and have to do it again. I'm running GV by the way.

I would probably flash a custom / rooted stock rom rather than a rooted vodafone rom, which if I remember was not even your ROM anyway?

Widgets and apps that boot on start up should not be moved to SD as the sd card is mounted in android after apps are started (so start up apps dont start up, nor do widgets)...

In regards to the buttons, i think this is a software issue.

I think if you backup user apps and data (titanium backup), do a wipe and flash a decent rooted sense rom, then restore via titanium (missing apps with data) everything will be fine.

However, you can quickly check if its hardware or not. If you have Clockworkmod recovery, turn off the phone. Hold vol down and power on. Use vol to highlight recovery and power to select it.

Once in recovery, use the trackball to go to advanced and select it with the trackball. There should be a key test menu.

If all teh buttons work fine there, then software is your issue. If not, its hardware.

At first it wouldn't work, then for the second time it did and it said, "Home and back button enabled"... What does this mean? Also, when you say use "Titanium BakUp" to back up all user applications to flash a ROM, is that mandatory? Because although it seems much harder I'd rather just install them all on after via the Market (Plus some are on my SD card). And when you say flash a ROM, do you mean a different one from the Vodafone ROM?

I think that just means they work?

Not mandatory. Installing from market is even better than titanium after reset as no risk of backing up a problem. So that's fine.

Yeah try a full wipe and flash a custom Rom

Sorry to bother, just two questions... When you say do a "full wipe," do mean factory reset? And will ANY rooted ROM (Except the Vodafone one of course) do for the phone? For example, the rooted version of GingerBread (Android 2.3.).

Yes, full wipe is a factory reset. But if you want to make sure, do that, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik (under advanced menu in clockworkmod recovery). That will wipe cache twice, but as I say, it's making sure.

Whatever ROM appeals.

Could you give me a link to the proper rooted version of GingerBread... I can't find it on Google... Thanks.

There isn't a single answer to that question. It depends what you want:

* Pure GB, no Sense, different mixes of apps and customisations (AOSP)
* GB with the original Sense
* GB with all or part of the more advanced Sense from later devices
* GB with no Sense, but a different custom user interface (MIUI)

All of these are available. The best starting point is the desire index thread at XDA. By now most of the ROMs in the first post of that thread are GB based. Be warned that many of the more advanced Sense ROMs do not fit in a desire's memory, but use an ext partition on the SD card to contain part of the ROM, so these will need a little bit more preparation than the non-Sense or simpler Sense ROMs.

The first posts of that thread are a collection of links to the different ROM threads. Always read the first couple of posts of a thread to learn what features it has, any particular steps needed to set it up, etc.

Okay, so what would I have to do to get the GB with all or part of the more advanced Sense from later devices?

Pick a ROM with those features from the index that you like the look of (Sense 1.9/2.1, or Sense 2.1+3.0 hybrid, or even Sense 3.0), read the installation instructions in the thread, make sure you understand them, follow them.

Many will simply require an ext partition of a certain minimum size, but some others require more than one ext partition (e.g. one for ROM overflow and one for user apps). A number these days offer "CM7" versions, but unless you also S-Off and change your internal memory partition these are not for you. If you meet terminology that you don't understand, ask before flashing.

I'm afraid I'm not a Sense person, so can't really recommend any of these as I've never used them. Have a glance through people's sigs in this forum and you'll get some idea of what others use (the "what ROM type" thread might be worth a flick through).

I have a problem, I installed a GingerBread ROM on it, but when I switch it on, the screen just says, "OXYGEN" in green writing, and stays like that for ages. Any ideas?

Yes, I went to, "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then, "apply sdcard:update.zip". But I didn't download the ROM from here, to be honest, it seemed like too much work so I just downloaded one I found on Google (Oxygen), then done what I just said. Is that going to be a problem?

2 things

1: wipe dalvic is not enough you need to wipe all user data (wipe data/facotry reset) within recovery

get the files from xda developers
