Help Home Screen Icons

I've read the instructions in the manual for my Captivate, but can't edit as it states. Since one of the default icons at the bottom of my home screen disappeared ( I think it was Email) I've been trying to get it back.. or perhaps add a different one. I have Contacts, Messaging, Camera & Market in the upper row; Phone, Browser & Apps in the bottom row. But everything I've tried, I cannot add an icon, shortcut or widget to the bottom row. The only actual customization I've been able to do is add them to the upper portion of the screen, but not to the blank space. How would you go about that?

Ah! It was the Contacts Icon that disappeared. I'd like it back in the default position on the bottom row.

Yes, it is. I don't know why I went to the manual instead... gotta get use to going to the other place.
