Help Home screen lag

To me, it happens after I was browsing the net for a few minutes. When I hit the home button, sometimes the home screen takes long to redraw.

reducing the amount of homescreens and keeping full CPU on did not make any difference

Really hope the sort this out with some sort of firmware update or something.

A phone of this quality and power should not have any re-draw issues

Anyone else getting bad lag on home screen after lets say browsing internet ? I browse internet for a while then exit and icons take ages to load up on home screen

I personally dont have that issue with S3(thank god) but had that Issue with HTC before...i can only recommend try to turn off your phone, take battery out for 30 seconds or more, get it back again, turn on, and keep your phone always clean of apps, press on menu and clean them all up all the time this should keep it smooth, other than that try other posts maybe someone will find a cure for that) enjoy your S3)

This issue is now fixed on the latest update, which is available on Kies now. I've not had it once since applying the update.

When was it posted? Don't have the phone till Monday. Did the update summary state what the fix/changes were?

I had the home screen lag and redrawing on the International GS3, but I do not have that problem with the Canadian version I am pretty sure it has to do with the Ram. On the International one I used to get it daily after using google chrome.

There's more memory available with latest update, I'm not sure if the issues fixed though as it only installed yesterday, needs more testing.

Just downloaded the update and the phones feels much better had no redraws so fingers crossed all will stay well. Feels like the firmware at release was a beta :) the video make app is back as well from Samsung apps I missed that from gs2

I've had one redraw since I installed the update, but it's still definitely way better. I'd get redraws literally every time after leaving the browser.

Hopefully Samsung will keep this up and keep sending out lots of minor fixes. Unlikely though.

Try this

1. Settings-> developer options-> and Window animation scale and Transition Animation scale -> change both of those to 0.5x (or 0 for both, for instant reactions).

Actually, I have found it to be different. I messed around in these settings, and I found that the best for me was to set Window animation scale to 0x, and Transition Animation scale to 2x. This worked for me, although it doesn't get rid of it, it more or less makes it unnoticeable. What since the Transition Animation is 2x, it takes more time to transition, and the home screen will load while the animation is taking its time. Also disabling S Voice on the home button reduces lag also.

This is only a temporary fix, I personally like them at 1x and 1x, but since this makes it better, I changed it. Still, the best thing we can do is wait until an update.

Well that's a pisser. Sure it's real easy to tell someone to use a launcher but what about all the people buying the phone because they like TW and it's features? This could be a deal breaker.

people buy this thing BECAUSE of TW and not in spite of it? could have fooled me...

So if you install Nova, the default launcher of the S3 will be replaced/overwritten?
no, will not be overwritten...but if you are rooted you can use an app like Titanium to freeze the TouchWiz launcher and no longer allow it access to memory...

The only real solution to this is Jelly Bean's Project Butter.
i disagree...the answer to this problem is better memory management, or making it so the launcher CANNOT be killed from memory...

this issue is NOT lag...its redraws because the launcher was bumped from memory...

Have changed the window and transition animation scale to 0.5 - still happens, tried force gpu rendering - still happens. currently trying to limit background process to 2 at the most to see what happens.
thats because what youre doing is speeding up the transitions/animations...in reality this will probably make the redraw issue appear WORSE...

Also disabling S Voice on the home button reduces lag also.
thats not lag...that is simply the phone waiting to see if your press the button again to launch S-Voice...

Has the amount of lag to get to the home screen been mentioned? Mine is just about a full second. I turned off the 2 animation things

youre talking about when you press the physical home key?...if so then yes...and its not lag...

by default, double clicking the home key launches S-Voice...when you press once the phone is simply waiting to see if you press it again to launch S-Voice...if you disable the double click launch the delay is gone

Actually if u lower the animation speeds, it "speeds up" how fast the app pops up and disappears when u click the app to open, or click the home button to close. For me i never had too big of a delay, but after these changes its literally in your face when u open or close an app as soon as the appropriate button is pressed.

If someone is still having delay issues, especially after disabling voice and adjusting animations... I'd suggest getting a new phone from the store. It shouldn't be lagging like that one bit. I wish I could post a YouTube video.. anyhow I'm using the quad core. When I compared against US versions, the US version did tend to be the slightest bit behind. But I have a hard time believing it would continue after these changes.

you're missing the point...what is being complained about is home screen re-draws..not the time it takes animations to take place...

if you speed up the animations of the apps opening and closing it is going to EXACERBATE the issue of the home screens being re-drawn because you will be staring at a blank screen longer...if anything, slowing down the animations will at least give the launcher more time to re-draw while the animations are taking place...

Thanks. I probably could have found it if I read through this whole post.

Note: this place is much more help oriented with fewer of the nasty comments (fun joking aside) than many other forums (not necessarily phones)
