How can I change/set the id of my phone in regards to what it shows in a wifi network?

ex. when looking at the list of wifi devices connected to my router: my computer is "danarki-nb", my fathers is "dads desktop", even our Wii is listed as "wii", but for my phone it is blank.

I can see the ip the phone has in it's wifi settings when I tap for our home network, and can see the list in the router settings so I know which one is my phone and i also know it currently has no id. I'ed like to be able to name it so that if i'm on someones wifi and they check to see whats connected they see a name they'll recognize and don't kick/block me.

Standard TCP/IP doesn't broadcast a host name. That would be handled by DNS, but there's no DNS name service on the Captivate. And even if there was, that's not the name being shown by your router. Typically the only name shown would be the NetBIOS/SMB name, which requires a separate service to be running.

The Captivate does not broadcast a NetBIOS name by default, but you may be able to get this by using an SMB app/plugin off the market. There are a few. Some are mentioned in the Captivate FAQ (look under "wifi"):

This has nothing to do with SMB. DHCP requests can optionally contain a hostname. I see the same thing on my routers, my captivate isn't sending a hostname with the DHCP request.

It depends on the router. Most only show the SMB name.
