Homescreen still slow redrawing

The check box helps for normal activity but memory intensive apps (like Nav) will still cause the launcher to get the kibosh. Nav is always the first thing I try when I want to see if the launcher will stay in memory .

Interesting. I wonder if there is a way to keep LauncherPro in memory no matter what. Seems to me that there should be a way to do this.

Given Android's "kill anything not important to the user (aka at the front)" architecture, I don't think there is a way to do it reliably without changes from the Goog. From my POV there are two things most important, my home screen/launcher and the app I'm using at the time. Those it should keep in memory at all times, and then anything that I've used recently.

Hopefully I'm wrong and someone will find the magic bullet. Even with that, it is indeed better than it was before so I'm happier .

Same situation that's been lingering around for a couple months now. THEN, thought it was Helix. Unloaded and went back to stock 3 screen. Yet still slow redraw. especially maps. Only used shortcut icons on home screens. Still slow. so what the H. In comes LP. Just as fine as stock at least.
Conclusion. I wondered originally if that is why 2.2 came so fast. Noticed this lag just after 2.1 upg. is 2.2 supposed to correct the lag. Do we know that. I am at this point assuming this is not an isolated problem and Android knows about it. Every time I get that @#%@& lag I'm glad some Iphone fan isn't looking over my shoulders. humbled indeed.
We all need to go onto Adroid developer site and blast this problem.

Lol, indeed. I just think the real issue is that the Droid has an Achilles heel and this is one of its symptoms... low RAM. I'll bet that any phones that have 512 MBs RAM (Nexus One, Incredible, Evo, etc.) don't have this issue at all. But still, I would think 256 MBs would still be plenty for the OS and keep at least a few apps running in the background without any re-loading.

Someone needs to figure out how to solder another 256 MBs onto the Droids mobo though, lol. I'd do it . If it had 512 MBs, then there wouldn't really be anything separating this phone from any of the other Android Flagship phones, IMO.

Another thought. Who of you have lag and by what method did you get 2.1?
I have lag and upgraded through forum ROM.
(especially wanting to know if any did OTA upgrade and have lag as well)
Just in the back of my head, waiting on OTA Froyo for that reason. Yes even experts will say, "It's (downloaded in forum) the SAME" and we should by all accounts respect those experts. (maybe)

I haven't noticed this. I have LW and twelve widgets on my phone and not notice slowness or lag in general. Also, since the new feature in LauncherPro, I have not had an issue with homescreen redrawing.

Having live walls i think is my issue. I have only 10 widgets and a standard wallpaper right now and it flies with LauncherPro. Add in a live wallpaper and it goes to nothing worth using. Spend a lot of my time trying to move from screen to screen with it barely moving. Since the update i have not tried a live wall but ill give it a try soon.

This is interesting. When I am in System Recovery, I highlight the option to wipe cache partition. And press the camera button to select it. I then get the following message: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

What does this mean? Do I have a defective OS? Am I doing something wrong? I thought I was knowledgeable with all this as I've been thinking about rooting, but apparently I may not be.

Please help me understand why it cant access this directory.

Edit: I just tried this again, and the error message I referenced above actually shows up as soon as I enter recovery mode. When I highlight and select clear cache, it doesn't do anything at all.

I just did this without a problem. You mention camera button to select the option. You use your d-pad keys to highlight the options and then hit the middle, gold key to select it. Not the camera button. BTW, I'm a novice to all this too....have done a bunch of root reading and will probably give it a shot this weekend. Things do seem to run a bit quicker but I need more time to see.

I am on stock 2.2.2 and this home screen performance lag is unbearable. I have no live wallpapers, no widgets and 50MB open on the phone. I have cleared cache with aCCleaner, uninstalled apps, cleared data for apps, but nothing works. I always have a 10 second delay waiting for the home screen to redraw. I can barely turn on the phone to check the time now. My benchmark is to turn on the camera and then go home. This is a guaranteed 10-15 delay.

I had the same problem, stock. I switched to adw.launcher, with the option to lock it in memory, and it has helped tremendously.

LauncherPro works better for some people, adw for others. For me, adw makes the phone bearable again. It's free, give it a shot.

I'd read somewhere that this problem is caused by moving apps to the SD card. Supposedly it takes longer to refresh the icons this way? I haven't tried moving everything back to my phone, but I'm about to. This screen refresh lag is annoying! Also I'm not using any special launcher. Just the stock Android 2.2.1.

Anybody tried moving their apps?

I have the problem with the phone dialer too. Sometimes I'll be listening to music then want to make a call. 45 seconds later the call starts to connect. This really pisses me off.

This will solve all of your problems:
In a terminal,
type su and enter.
Then type echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop and enter.
Then reboot.

What this does it "pin" the homescreen in memory so that when some app or glitch sucks up all the RAM, the OS won't dump your homescreens. It will be the last thing over the rails when it is dumping extra weight. With this code entered, the redraw will almost NEVER happen. I have used it with the stock launcher, custom launchers and stock and custom roms.

If you need a terminal, just get Terminal Emulator from the market.
