Samsung USA took to its Twitter account to let users know that it is working on a "simple and reliable upgrade" to get it's Galaxy S smartphones to Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. Samsung offers multiple Galaxy S smartphones in the U.S. including the T-Mobile Vibrant, the Verizon Fascinate, the AT&T Captivate, the Epic 4G from Sprint, as well as the US Cellular Mesmerize. Currently, Samsung has sold over 9.3 Galaxy S devcices globally.

The latest news seems to indicate that we will get updated in March...

Whaaaat? A store sales employee sounding optimistic about a "sooner rather than later" release date?

That's unpossible! :D

A sales rep stretching the truth? Unheard of. The update will never happen. The Mesmerize will not run Android 3 and you all wasted your money. I cry every night when I think of the money I spent on this phone.

They will continue to lead us all on until they decide to not support the phone anymore. This is the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of cellular phones. I can't believe that they would lie to everyone and still have all of you believing that they are going to support this phone with OS updates.

Its really not that bad. Slow down, Chicken Little.

These phones will get 2.2 at some point. After that, who knows? 3.0 is really 2.2/2.3 for tablets, so its not going to be that much different than 2.2 or 2.3.

In another year, we're all going to want another phone anyway. I stopped worrying about software upgrades for my phones 3 Blackberries ago.

Of course the Mesmerize won't get Android 3 (Honeycomb). It's a tablet-specific OS. As far as 2.2 or 2.3, I don't see why we wouldn't be getting at least 2.2 soon. The Mesmerize is certainly able to handle either OS, so it's just a matter of time before US Cellular gets their version of Froyo (and later, Gingerbread). It wouldn't make sense for them not to update their phones when they have people clambering for the new updates.

Plus, with Verizon (allegedly) getting the iPhone soon, that will light a fire under US Cellular to step up their tech game.

Don't believe any of it. It's all lies. It was suppose to be out by the end of the year and that didn't happen, so the March release date is all smoke and mirrors.

Would you like to have it out now with all kinds of bugs and problems?? Or would you rather wait for it to be tested thoroughly and not have any major kinks when it is released??

The Mesmerize has a lot of internal memory and can hold plenty of apps without saving to the SD card.

2.2 for the Mesmerize is scheduled to be released by the end of March.

Ginger is right. Currently, the Mesmerize is slated to get Froyo in March. But twists and snags happen. Samsung has the phone on 5 major carriers and they are dealing with updates for all of them. Each carrier is working on the updates as well. And each phone is different, explaining why Froyo can't happen for all phones at once.
As someone else said, there should be absolutely no issues with the Mesmerize and internal memory. There is about 1.5GB of internal memory on that thing! You want to hear people complain about memory issues? Check out the Desire (and any 3G HTC phone) forums!
I'll admit that the mobile wifi hotspot will be cool on the Mesmerize. So yes, there is reason to be excited when the update does come out. But waiting for updates is like watching water boil. Already, the Mesmerize is one of the top smartphones out there. Inevitably, there will be something newer, better, and faster, but for now, just enjoy your slick device!

Why do you lie? You know that the update will be pushed back to December AT LEAST. This is the worst update support that I have ever seen on anything in my entire life. I for one am going to sell this thing on ebay and get a phone from someone that cares about their customers enough to offer update support.

The Mesmerize already can do wi-fi hotspot. It comes with the Wireless Modem app which works perfectly. If you root it, there are other apps as well, but there is no need. The wireless modem app just uses data. Also, Froyo on mesmerize is actually coming early Feb!

That's great that you are OK getting shafted by not getting updates that should already be available for your phone since google works with developers on the new versions of their software to ensure prompt updates. I am sure the lot lizards at your truck stops enjoy your positive attitude. It's going to take more than this phone to make me "cream" but whatever floats your boat, buddy. I hope you don't take it the wrong way when I tell you to "hit the road".

CG, there is nothing wrong with the Mez with 2.1. Sure, having 2.2 will be a nice upgrade and it will help out a lot. But the phone is plenty useful as is.

Samsung has not been great about releasing updates, there is no doubt about that. But the product itself is not a bad one.

It has no more or less issues with Android than HTC or Motorola, and in some respects, they are miles ahead of them. I would much rather purchase a Samsung phone today than a Motorola, given that Moto is actively trying to lock their devices down to prevent rooting.

Own a few more devices for a few years, you'll find that OS updates are never released on a schedule that suits current customers. Manufacturers rarely hit any target dates for a software update.

I just called US Cellular, they said both the Desire and Mesmerize will get 2.2 in Febuary.
Now cue CountryGravy blathering about how it's a lie and how we will never get Froyo OR Gingerbread, and that we wasted our money on our phones, despite the fact that they seem to be working just fine, aside from a delay in getting the (unneeded) firmware updates.

:D

I've never understood why people get so bunched up over OS updates for phones. Nobody yells at Microsoft for rolling out a software patch (well, okay, they do, but not because of the date they send it out...)
