Hotspot

Does anyone know if you have your phone set to hotspot but not using the interent via laptop, just sitting is it using data.
 
It will still use data because the data connection is active. The phone will update itself, like contacts sync, apps like twitter, etc. Basically it's no different from having data on but the WiFi hotspot is off. The phone itself is using data.
