Help How are photos ordered in gallery?

In the built in gallery - how are threads ordered? I thought maybe by date, but that doesn't seem right - then I thought by modified date, but that doesn't seem to be it, etiher.

More importantly, can they be re-ordered? Or can you pick another property by which to organize them?

All my photos are listed in order from oldest to newest in all my folders.
