Root How can I check whether my N7 is rooted

I think I have rooted my N7 but I am not sure. After the rooting process it looks the same as before. How can I check whether it is actually rooted.

One of the easiest ways is to download an app that requires root, like Titanium Backup, from the play store and launch it. It will ask for root access which you can grant or disallow if you are rooted. It will not prompt you if you aren't rooted.

I downloaded Adfree and the Playstore says that it is installed. But I cannot find it anywhere on the N7. How can I find it.

Superuser (and a lot of other new stuff) is in Settings > Apps. So I guess I am OK.

That gets me to another question. There are a lot of Apps in Settings > Apps. But they have no icons in All Apps. How can I activate those guys so that I can use them.

Most of the ones without icons are google services and other background apps. To find Adfree and launch it, navigate back to you home screen. At the bottom and in the middle should be an icon of a round circle with a few dots in the middle. Hitting that will take you to your list of apps that you can launch and it should be alphabetical. Adfree should be in there if it downloaded.

Also I have moved this to the all things root section to help get the appropriate attention.

I looked in All Apps, but it is not there. In the meantime I have downloaded (and paid) Poweramps. That one went AWOL too. My N7 seems to be a black hole. I looked in all places I could think of (with my limited knowledge).

I am especially confused because the Playstore shows those 2 programs as 'Installed'. But during the 'installation', they never showed in the notification area.

I previouslu downloaded Opera and Dolphin without any problem. Their icons showed immediately in All Apps.

When you go back to them in the play store, there should be an option to open the app if its installed. I would also try restarting the tablet

Like so

Here is the story; I did not realize that my WiFi was shut off - I guess from the rooting. So the downloads never happened. I now have AdFree and Poweramp working. But Titanium that I also downloaded only shows in Settings > Apps - not in All Apps. How can I get this to work.

Did you download Titanium Backup Pro by any chance? If so, that is actually only a key to fully unlock the free version. Download the free version and it should show up and be good to go.

Thanks, I"ll try that. As I said, I am on a steep learning curve. LOL

Update: that worked.

Hmm, I thought I was rooted. But Titanium tells me otherwise. I have to work on that. Somewhere along the line I must have made a mistake.

Did it ever prompt you do allow it root access? If it didn't then you're not rooted. If it did, but you denied it, then it will say you aren't rooted. This can be corrected by going into the Superuser or SuperSU app and changing it from block to allow.

No it did not prompt me. It was doing something automatic with the little circle churning and then it came back and said that I was not rooted.
I also had some trouble with AdFree. That said it could not find the system partition (or something like that).

I guess I am not rooted. I really don't know where the problem is. I made 5 attempts with the Nexus Root Toolkit and with the Nexus Toolkit from Mark Skippen. I am usually good at this stuff because I was an operating system developer for 35 years. But this one beat me. And what really gets to me is that any 5th grader can do it, LOL.

When you attempted to root the tab using the toolkits, did you unlock the bootloader before hand by any chance? The toolkits tend to use the easy method for rooting, but they require that the bootloader be unlocked beforehand. If it wasn't the root method will fail.

The toolkits should have the option to unlock the boot loader as well. If not, I can add the unlocking instructions to my manual root instructions in this forum.

Its very easy, just 1 command

Yes, I did the Unlock each time - with both toolkits. But there must have been another curve I did not turn.

What is the current android version and build number if you going into settings/about. Also what was the version number of the toolkit you used? The only thing I can think of is that it attempted to root using an outdated SU.zip for your version of android.

Can you do me a favor and hold the power, and volume up and down buttons for ~10 seconds? This will reboot the tablet into your bootloader.

There should be an image of an android lying on his back with a door on his front open.

It will also say UNLOCKED in small red retters on the left side

This will verify that you are indeed unlocked

1. The current version is 4.2.1 build JOP40D. The Nexus Root Toolkit I used is v1.6.0.

2. On the Fastboot screen it says: Lock State - unlocked

To me that all looks very much of what one would expect.

Thank you. That is unlocked then.

Step 2....does it have a custom recovery?
Reboot back into boot loader. Use volume up or down to select recovery and then hit power.

If you get a red triangle with an exclamation point its the stock recovery. That's not what we want
