Root How can I check whether my N7 is rooted

Hmm, I already hit 2 bumps:

1. When I turn the N7 into fastboot mode, it disconnect. Does not show any more in Computer. In normal mode it does connect. That must be my driver problem.

2. When I run the first command from the Android folder in cmd, I get:


C:\Android>C:\Users\whs>cd Android
'C:\Users\whs' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\Android>

Same thing when I run it any other way.

It will disconnect because it will attempt to connect via a different driver. If the driver isn't installed correctly, it will show up as an unknown device, or something like Android 1.0 under the unknown device category in the device manager. If it installed correctly, it will show up as ADB Android Development Bridge or something to that extent.

if this "C:\Android\Platform-Tools\sdk-tools\sdk-tools" is the directory to where the adb and fastboot files are located, then the only command you should need to get there would be "cd C:\Android\Platform-Tools\sdk-tools\sdk-tools". It is case sensitive though.
 
I think my main problem is that I cannot install any PdaNet driver. Any driver I try I run into some problem. So I end up with the generic driver that was installed when I first connected the device.
 
Place it in a directory you can find unzipped. Then open the device manager, right click on the unknown device that looks like it's something to do with android. Then right click on it, and click update driver. Click the second option for let me choose location. Locate where you unzipped the drivers select that, and it should install.
 
Dah, I really should have known this. The whole rooting story has worn me out. I cannot even think straight.

But I am now rooted

I should have thought of this option a long time ago. Since I had all those problems with the driver, it came to me that there must be something in my system that is blocking it.

I switched over to my Toshiba laptop that my wife usually uses only to run her crafting cutting machine (an overkill with an i5 and a SSD, LOL), and voila - all the 'standard' procedures ran like on rails. I used NRT v1.6.0 and PdaNet.

I checked with Adfree and Titanium which both require rooting. And they immediately came back asking for permissions.

I really have to thank both of you for all the effort you put in trying to help me. And all of that only because of a malfunctioning desktop.
I have to say though that this desktop gets used for a lot of things with a gezillion programs and a bunch of virtual machines with Windows 8 and Linux. Maybe those threw the monkey wrench.

In any case, we are now thru this one and can go on to new problems. I already have a couple in my sleeve that I will discuss in seperate threads.
 
I'm glad that it all worked out in the end. A lot a doors open once you are rooted and can really let you do what you want with your device. Congrats.
 
I'm glad you're rooted. Big thanks to jhawkk for being there along the way. I tried to do some Christmas shopping today foe the girlfriend and came back empty handed :confused:

Thanks, and the exercise was not useless for me because I learned a lot. I only feel sorry for you guys that put so much effort into trying to help me and it was such a simple problem.

But I know how that is. I am on several Windows forums as a helper and many of my 35.000 postings of the last 5 years went a similar way. Sometimes I wonder whether I should donate the computers and get a life. :beerglass:

Many thanks to you also.

For Christmas do like we do. We buy nothing for Christmas but of the (more important) things that we buy during the year (in the US) we keep the boxes and wrap those for under the tree. Then - like Mr. Bean - we open them with great excitement.

The stuff we buy in Germany does not get that treat. No need to lug boxes over the Atlantic. And there we don't buy much anyhow because everything is so expensive. The only thing we had to buy this year was a new car to replace our 13 year old model. And that did not come in a box.

Do you have an app called rom toolbox? I would download that and OTA root keeper. You can flash the custom recovery TWRP with romtoolbox and you can backup super su with root keeper. Root keeper will also keep you from losing root when updates get pushed in the future.
Root keeper will let you know if you are rooted as well.
