Help How can I fix texting issue. .....

f8lpony

Newbie
I have a captivate. When I compose a text message the persons number initially shows up as the ten digits. Now when I close out of the text message and try to go back and serbs something the persons number shows up as only 7 digits. When I try to send a text with only the 7 numbers I get a return error message saying

8852662 Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number.

Any clues ?

MY past experince with Samsung phones is that they're always anal about the area code.
If I save someones number as a 7 digit number, when they call me, their contact info does not show up. Only if it's saved as a 10 digit number.
Any other phone I've owed I can save contacts as 7 digits without any problems.

Just be sure to always use 10 digits

Yeah that's the weird part. All my contacts have the 10 d
igits. I tried deleting the contact and re entering them. No luck.

I have this problem too. It only affects one person. (That person is an iPhone user, but not sure it's relevant.)

What I've learned to do:
* New Message
* Recent
* Pick this person
* Compose message
* Send

If I ever forget, and try to reply to this person, then the Recent has their 7 digit number. So when I do the above procedure, I have to hand edit the number back to 10 digits. Thus I've *learned* to use the above procedure always to make it fairly easy to send this person a message or reply.

The following thread is related . . .

I had the same issue which I suspect was caused by syncing my facebook contacts/google account before setting up my #'s.

I fixed this area code texting error on my att samsung captivate by doing the following:

1.) factory reset
2.) removed my texting contacts from sim
3.) created new contacts for each, saving them to phone w/ 10 digit number
4.) copied each contact to the sim card (optional)
5.) set up wifi, synced facebook and google accounts

Hope this helps...

Gee, I really don't want to do a factory reset.

Are you saying you created contacts in the phone by hand?

I wonder if the problem is related to having the 7-digit contact in the SIM or something like that? I wonder if a contact (or all contacts) can be removed from the SIM and then re-copied to the SIM. In fact, I don't care for them to be in the SIM at all. Now that I'm on Android, I'll forever sync with my Google Contacts / GMail / Calendar / etc. in the cloud.

Samsung is the only phone I've seen that has this problem.
Any other phone is smart enough to figure out the 7 digit number is the same as the 10 digit number.

You shouldn't have to do a factory reset.
MAke sure in your contacts they are saved as 10 digit numbers, without the 1

I just started having this same issue, but only with ONE number. Just got a new phone number entered it in as a 10 digit saved etc etc like normal, but it will not stay a 10 digit one when i go to text, the phone converts it to a 7 digit one for some reason and its really quite annoying. Anyone else having this issue and have a solution yet?

I have the same problem and with only one person. I've tried the delete all messages/contact instances, have this person txt me save that as a contact... You name itI've done it. Help?

Has anyone found a solution to this? It's very annoying. I have tried many things to remedy it. I also only have this (missing area code) occur with a few numbers. I have tried deleting in gmail, on the phone and re-entering, but no success. I have an Epic 4g (Samsung/Sprint)

I added the contact number without a name and saved it as "other". Once I did that I opened up the contact to send a text and the first thread will have a box towards the top. It displayed two numbers so I erased them both and re-entered the correct number. It worked for me so I hope it works for you. I was pulling my hair out and then had this accident.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with Samsung phones. I have had three of them, and I say three cause I keep upgrading. A little common sense and a little patience is all you need with ANY phone.

I solved the 7digit 10digit "unable to text" issue simply by erasing my Phone Calls LOG. and voila! I was able to text friends again that I had previously dialed directly without their area code.
