Root How can I install a rom without the rom manager?

Some background:

I rooted my phone using the new unrevoked, and then installed the 'Google Apps (froyo)' rom from the rom manager. Clearly this wasn't the right thing to do.

So when I restart, it's still sense UI with 2.1.
Google apps keeps forceclosing, preventing me from adding my google account, and in turn having the marketplace. So I have no way of downloading the rommanager and reinstalling my old rom. Does anyone know what I did wrong, and if and how I can fix this?

I did create a backup rom. Though if I get the rommanager and can install 2.2, I don't see why I would need this. So I guess my trouble stems from the googleapps forceclosing.

simple...go into recovery and wipe cache, wipe data/factory reset. it'll set it back to basically the day you activated it plus you'll still have clockworkmod and superuser.
