How can I root my old hero without a computer??

So I've looked around and haven't found much via google or here but knowing me I just wasn't looking at the right spots for info. Reason being my laptop is very dead and gone :(. All I want to do is turn my old hero into a mp3 player really jut with out all the other stuff from Sprint and to make it a little faster. Any help would be awesome. Hope all is well here on the Hero side :0)

I would recommend Z4Root to root your handset. You can find it fairly easily by doing a Google search for it. After you have it, just sideload it to your handset or you can even download it right from the web browser of your handset. You should also enable the ability to install apps from unknown sources.

You will need a file explorer like EStrongs File Explorer to find the .apk for Z4Root on your microSD card. Then you can install it and run it. Choose permanent root and wait about five minutes. If it seems frozen, try to hit the back button and then reboot your handset.

Hi all
I am planning to install some custom ROMs ( suggestions welcome, but I look forward to CyanogenMod 7 )
I have done / know the following:
My Hero is rooted ( by Z4 root and verified by rootchecker), I have latest ROM Manager, have made a full back up of the SD card in a separate HDD and made a backed up current ROM using ROM Manager.
Can some one please tell me what to do next, specifically the following:
>Flashing the image
>Nandroid Backup
> Flashing a custom ROM
Obviously, I have done not of the above yet.
Also: I tried to boot the Hero into recovery mode, first by pressing home and power on, that did not help, then power and volume down, this did get me into the small font size menu and when I press the key to boot in recovery, I get stuck at HTC logo. Same when I try to do this from ROM manager ..
Much thanks.
KT

First thing you need to do is open Rom Manager and flash CWM recovery image, once you have done that report back.

Thanks for your reply.
I clicked on flash CWM Recovery, was asked to confirm the phone model, which I did and got a message that it was successful.
Now CWM Recovery reads
> Current Recovery Clockwork Mod 2.5.0.7
> Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7
KT

OK, now try to boot into recovery and see if it works

yea, I Tried reboot into recovery from CWM and it gets stuck at HTC logo, by stuck I mean I waited 25 mins, then took out the battery and booted normally. I Switched it off, then tried the power and volume down button and same thing ( I Waited 20 mins here )
Thanks again for your quick response.

wierd... unroot with z4 root and start fresh. re root, then install CWM again. and see what happens then!
