How can I silence Gmail notifications?

Or you can go to Settings, Accounts and Sync, and turn off Sync, then it will only refresh whenever you go in there and manually refresh.

Go to Gmail. Menu and go to settings, and click on your account
You'll see sound and vibrate

Note that the "settings" is not the usual settings menu for an Android app. (They ought to have put it there, but they didn't!)

Instead, run the GMail app, then tap on your Inbox, and then scroll all the way to the bottom to "Settings," and tap it.

Then tap your email address, and you can turn off (uncheck) Notifications. Or you can tap "Inbox sound & vibrate," and then select the "Silent" ringtone, and uncheck Vibrate.

(This is GMail Version 4.9 (1271612) running on Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2.)
