sounded like a good option up until the reboot part....1. Open the Phone app.
2. From the Phone tab, dial *#*#4636#*#*
3. Tap the Phone information menu.
4. Scroll down to the Set preferred network type setting and set it to CDMA auto (PRL).
5. Press the Home button.
Reboot.
should only have 1x or 3g speed now.

miallali said:I suggest you download APN on/off Widget. Turns off my 4G and drops me to 3G without needing to reboot. If will also let you turn it back on right away.
Saves a lot of juice.
Have you got data to back that up? Cause I compared battery usage with 1X vs 4G (using the Any Cut method which requires reboot), and there was no significant improvement...maybe 1 or 2% more battery life after 3 - 4 hours with 1X. Still went down pretty much the same.

Download "LTE Switch" from the market. It's free and works great. Alot faster than the option given above.
MetroPOS that is actually a great idea. If someone can go a day on 4G alone and post the battery usage graph. Then the next day use the phone the same amount but on 1x and then post the battery usage graph for that then we can compare the difference.
I know WiFi uses very little battery compared to 4G by using just one graph alone but this could be very interesting.
Or you could use 4G in the morning and 1x all afternoon then it should be easier to tell the difference by the slopes since they will be on the same graph.
Tried "data enabler" a free app (widget) in the market.
It works great on the esteem

What does Data Enabler do ? Any negative effects of installing it ?
To turn off 4G: Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled
Uncheck Data enabled. The 4G icon at the top of the screen will disappear so I guess it's off. I'm trying this for hopefully longer battery life.
I was wrong here. This turns off ALL network speeds to the Internet. Talk and text only will work. Shouldn't have been so quick to post. However this will increase battery time somewhat, especially in standby. Wish there was 3G in the NYC metro area but I haven't heard such. 1x is a "little" slow. LOL
go to dilarer dial *#*#4636#*#* then press send check cdma auto then press radio off then press radio on and your on 1x
from what i know also is, 4g will not make the battery go faster, its the setting in the phone like, how bright the screen is, background data, and haptic feedback is uncheck to stop the vibration for the softkeys.
i have an extended battery and this is what i did i disable background data set the brightness to the lowest no animation no haptic feedback no vibrating keys and the battery lasts me more than the whole day and i use it for everything checking emails surfing watching videos playing games the extended battery does help a ton on my indulge i would have to disable the 4g to use it the whole day so theres definitely a big difference.
