Help How can I view text files on my HTC Wildfire S?

I've made a couple of reference files for myself in txt format, and put them onto the SD card, but can't for the life of me work out how I view them.
Am I being stupid and missing something incredibly simple?

Install a file manager such as Astro or ES File Explorer to navigate to them and then use something like Documents to Go or Google Docs to view them.
