Help How Contacts Work

I'm a bit confused about how contacts syncing works in the Nexus S (my first Android phone).

I have all my contacts on Google Contacts, I don't sync anything else (facebook, twitter, etc...)

But on Google Contacts, my groups are very important especially because I have friends in several countries.

So, when I'm making a call, I will prefer to have access to only one of those groups. But when I'm writing an e-mail, I will need access to all of them.

Since Nexus S doesn't seem to deal with "contacts groups" (true? false?), that confuses me quite a bit.

I have already kind of sorted out, that even if the contacts in not "synced" in the phone (if I have, for example, synced only my London contacts), all my contacts, irrespective of group/location, will be accessible when I'm filling the recipients of an e-mail (true? false?).

I have already sorted that if there are people in Paris, for example, that I still call a lot, I can add them to the "Starred in Android" group.

But I'm afraid that someday I will be without internet access on the phone and in the need of contacting some obscure person in Paris, and I won't have how to get their number (that, of course, could be solved if Nexus S did organised my contacts in groups, and I would routinely only access my "London" group, but still have all my "Paris" friends still there).

Any tips, solutions or app suggestions of how to make these stuff work better for me, or should I just get used to, either not having all my contacts in my phone, or just having to go though a bunch of contacts to find the ones that are in my city? (thinking now, I could just "star" all my London contacts, but that seems awfully weird solution)

Thank you for any help :)

It seems that the contacts program normally has all the contacts in the phone. It might just be displaying the favorites. If you sorted all the contacts by first name and placed a "L" in front of the first name for London contacts, that would sort all your London folks together. You would do the same for Paris ( "P" ).
