Root How could you possibly brick an Evo?

No, thankfully, my Evo is running just fine

I was just talking to someone about bricking mobile devices and I couldn't even think of how I could accidentally brick my own phone.

Couldn't you always just go into recovery and wipe/reflash? Unless there was a way to stop you from getting into recovery but I don't see how. I'm not an expert and I've learned everything I know from reading here and on XDA so I could be missing something.

A coupler months ago I tried to update my hboot version and my nandroids wouldn't work, my phone wouldn't boot the installed rom, I couldn't get into recovery like it wasn't installed. I had pretty well bricked it. The guys over at xda straightened me out with a different hboot that had a recovery but it was very scarry when I didn't know what to do. If I hadn't known about xda or if I had freaked out I probably would have had to take it to sprint. I would say its pretty hard to do un repairable damage unless maybe you were doing the long root method and did something majorly wrong.

It probably depends on who the user is how bad it can be. If what I mentioned above happened to a friend of mine he would have considered it dead and called insurance not knowing it was fixable. He isn't very tech savvy at ask he just wanted free wireless tethering so he rooted.

Ive righteously screwed up my phone, a few times too. But nothing that couldnt be fixed over a few hours of lost sleep at 2 and 3 AM haha!

And like nova said, i think most of the actual 'bricks' come from someone screwing up in the long root method from when people were rooting 2.1 and using adb and entered in a wrong command or something of the such.
If you dont know what youre doing with terminal, or command prompt, theres a lottt of things that could potentially go wrong lol

The only way I can think of is to flash yourself a bad hboot. Seems like no matter what happens worst case scenario is you can flash yourself a PC36IMG.zip with a new hboot and recovery and room.

From what I've heard some experiments while making the Unrevoked tools did cause bricked devices, but its stable now.
