How did they do this?

i bought tasker for this very reason. it sends any call that's not from someone in my contact list straight to voicemail. if they're a real person needing to talk to me, they can leave a message. if they're not, oh well. doesn't even leave a missed call icon in my notification bar, because technically it answers with the "decline" option.

i've gone into my call log after a week or so and seen 5-7 numbers from those scam companies. i don't even care if "declining the call lets them know the line is active", it's auto-blocked anyway.

eventually i'm sure they'll find a way to make their callbots leave messages. that'll be a fun day.
 
I rarely answer these calls, but once in awhile I do just for giggles. I keep them on the phone as long as possible rambling off nonsense, and asking a lot of questions to waste their time. They finally catch on or get tired, some even get pissed and then hang up. It becomes a game for me. I know......I am evil

I believe there's an app or program that let's you pick different number's , my son uses it and it irritates the heck out of me because it'll show a N.Carolina # and i know he's here in the same city as me.:mad:

Understood.

Still, if enough peeps report a company/number it will be investigated; if this agency shows a problem with false numbers then eventually congress or whatever agency will have to deal with it.

At some point a solution will be found, but as consumers we have to keep the pressure on.


edit: I report the number on my CallID and the company as best I can describe. Something is better than nothing.

I disagree. :eek:

Let's assume that they're using some method of choosing random numbers to show up as theirs on caller ID. Let's further assume that the random numbers actually belong to someone (even though in the incident I described in my OP this wasn't the case)--someone with no knowledge whatsoever that their number is being spoofed by scammers. Reporting the number could cause innocent people to have problems. At the very least, it wouldn't accomplish anything because the number really isn't the scammer's number...so why bother?
 
You can report. It will take some scammers and pests down for a bit. Rachel and Heather got busted big time last year. Kept them off line for all of 6 months. We might have had a couple of local scam outfits shut down. Companies can move offshore to boot. It's still very hard to get rid of a crammer even though the cell companies know about it.

As users get smarter, these companies that scam get more and more vicious. Social engineering ramps up, too.

As I said - our fax number was spoofed. It only showed up in the fax log, never the bill. If you don't see anything like false charges in a bill after double checking - you wouldn't know unless you were contacted.
