How do i get back to original software

hi guys,

i have a samsung galaxy s2 (GT-i9100 - NFC), which i got from orange end of 2011. I the in jan 2012 got help from this forum to root my phone and change the rom from the official (ROOTED) to:-

Rom & Build No: VillianROM 3.0
And' ver: 2.3.5
Baseband: i9100XXki1
Kernel: 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ninpo @ titan #20


Although the phone works okay, i'm beginning to notice a lot of slowdowns and regular reboots, so i want to go back to whatever latest google android official OS the S2 can handle (rooted). I've forgotten what to do and would be most grateful if someone could please help me with the following:-

1. Whats the best software/method to backup everything?
2. What is the latest rom (OFFICAL-rooted, but should not have a provider's bloatware) i can use on the S2?
3. Once backed up, how do i change from VillianRom to the latest/best official OS currently available?
4. How can i root the original rom?

If i were you i would install this

Ive been on the lite for a few weeks now and its superb, the guide will tell you what to wipe which will clear up most of your problems, this firmware is also prerooted, you can get the stock firmware which will be ICS 4.04 from sammobile if you decide to go that way or look here

The only thing to be careful of is to ensure you can still use NFC

A little bit confused by the above s2android! :confused:

You say you have a GT-i9100 with NFC. The only GT-i9100 version I know of with NFC, (Near Field Communication), is the, "P", variant... GT-i9100P.

You are currently running Villian ROM 3.0 on this which does not, AFAIK, support the GT-i9100P and NFC.

Titanium Backup + nandroid + efs file backups as described in detail in post #2 of the, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide".

2. What is the latest rom (OFFICAL-rooted, but should not have a provider's bloatware) i can use on the S2?

All the stock Samsung firmwares are operator branded releases. The latest one for your phone would be either the Orange, Android 4.0.4 or the O2, Android 4.0.4, depending on your carrier.

You can flash the official firmware by using Odin and the instructions and How-To video under the heading, "My firmware is not eligible for ICS yet but I want it now!", in post #1, here.

4. How can i root the original rom?

Once you have flashed the official stock, un-rooted, Samsung Firmware, you can re-root by following the step-by-step instructions and videos on posts #1 and #2 of the, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide".
 
First of all let me thank you guys very much for helping me. I greatly appreciate your advice.

@ kelis32 - I did look at Neatrom, but it has Jelly Bean 4.1.2, but I've noticed that I can get the Resurrection Rom which has lots more features and JB 4.2.1...Out of interest, why is Neatrom better?

@ ironass - I do actually have a i9100p, but ended up flashing the villianrom 3.0, which got rid of the "P". I also cannot get the CSC code as i now get an error when i dial *#1234#

FYI, guys, i have installed the Resurrection Rom, but for some strange reason it has no dialpad or touch-screen keyboard...weird.
 
Oh no guys! I have successfully flashed the orange 4.0.4 fw ironass gave, but once rebooted, the screen is stuck on the "S" logo. I've now waited for 20mins and still nothing. Can anyone please help me fix this problem?

I'm guessing that you tried to flash the stock Samsung firmware for the GT-i9100P over the custom ROM for the GT-i9100.

Try doing a wipe as mentioned in post #2 of the, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide", and see if that helps...

Thanks will try this right now and let you know in a few mins. FYI, I do have an original nandroid backup that was made when i newly rooted the phone, but when i try to use this nandroidbackup.md5 file, odin says it's invalid.
 
I've managed to wipe the cache partition, but the recovery menu has No advanced options. It says:-

ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY <3a>

reboot system now
apply update from ext' storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redband fota[FS]

I fixed it by going to the android system recovery and then chose wipe data/factory reset. i rebooted and its now on the home screen.

There is are a couple of questions i would like help with though:-

1. Am i right in thinking that my phone is now not rooted?
2. If so, how can i root it without having to go back to a custom fw?
3. Also let's say i didn't like the stock fw, is there a quicker way of going onto a custom fw? i.e. without needing odin?

Hello

In answer to your original question i like the Neat ROM lite as it has all the bloatware removed and you can basically build up your phone as you like, its also very stable and has all the enhancements of jellybean 4.1.2, this is based on the latest "leaked" 4.1.2 firmware from Samsung. There has been no firmware for the S2 based on 4.2 so all ROM's based on this are purely developer driven, but of course its all down to personal preference in the end

as for your other questions

1. You are not rooted
2. follow the dummies guide as posted by Ironass in post 3
3. Once you are rooted you will be able to install custom firmware by putting the file on your SD card and installing through CWM
 
thanks very much for the helpful reply kelis32. I may for now stick with the orange stock fw as it's very fast, although i do miss a rooted phone.

I've simply installed that rom mate and then uninstalled samsung's apps. Does Neatrom have any extra features? I was hoping that with the new official rom it would have had a lot more features. For example i like to setup my phone to go on silent at midnight and switch sound back on by 7am - to do this, i used an app called "volume control". Does neatrom have such a feature built-in?
 
NEAT ROM's are stock, deodexed, ROM's with added tweaks and optional mod's... see the NEAT xda thread, here.

A built-in feature of Jelly Bean is Blocking Mode in Settings. This allows you to disable incoming calls, notifications and even alarm and timer for a user defined period and you can even allow certain contacts, of your choosing, to circumvent that in case of emergencies.
 
Ahh right, i did notice the block mode mate, but i was worried incase it totally blocks everything. I still want any incoming calls/msgs to come through...just don't want them disturbing me at night, so i guess i'll have to disable notifications for that.

The last rom i installed (villianrom 3.0) turned out to be very slow after a bit, i was worried that NEAT maybe the same again, but i'll give it a try when i get the chance. So far, the JB 4.1.2 test fw is absolutely spot on, but i guess there's no harm in trying another rom.
