Help How do I get to /data/local??

Whenver there is mention of replacing the stock boot animation for our phones, I see the following instrcuctions: You never needed root to change the boot animation, just push to /data/local

My question is how do I get to /data/local???

Do I need a particular app? I recently rooted and am new to messing with the stock phone. I have NOT created any backups yet, but I understand this won't mess anything up as the phone will read the animation placed here before the original.
 
Thanks, colchori, but to be honest, I was looking for something that didn't require root functionality, since it's been said that changing the boot animation didn't need root access.
 
Sorry, I should have said I tried that one and it immediately told me the folder I was attempting to access required Root Explorer. Go figure. I'll keep messing around with different ones. Thanks again.
 
Sounds like you need to be rooted. Will a boot changer app do what you want? (They might require root as well.)
 
Yeah, that's what I thought to, but people insist you don't need to be. I am rooted, but just did it and haven't done much with it yet. Not sure if Root Explorer is worth $4, since I'm not sure what its functionality is, other than for this at the moment.
 
I'd rather pay $4 for rom manager, titanium backup or bootstrap than something I don't use much.

I'd try some of the free apps first. My day job is computer/IT so I'm probably more likely to use it than you.
 
Yeah, how often do I need to see my boot animation anyway? I just got the Droid Pro for my wife and seeing the boot in person made me a little jealous. I can live without it. (I rooted soley to get rid of ads on games my kids play, because they were driving me nuts hitting them and buying crap. One time, I heard my text sound go off when my son had the phone, and I almost ignored it. Then I saw it was from my bank saying a charge went through on my Visa. Then I had to find out what the hell he bought!) Anyway, I now want to try the black notification bar, but would rather not theme the phone if possible. I am happy with the way the stock theme, but I've customized the hell out of it. Not all that interested in themes...atm. ;)

Seriously, I appreciate the help! :)
 
I also like the dark status bar. I've gone without theme for quite long and finally installed a blue one. I wanted to make sure I was stable before. Some people complain about issues and it's often theme related.

Yup, having kids... good way to trash an otherwise perfect computer or phone. :D

Back in the olden' days, I used Astro file manager. You might check that out.
 
The funny thing is that I have Astro and ES File Explorer, but neither one shows a /local folder in the /data folder. Maybe I'll wait until Gingerbread and hope the screenshots of a black bar are accurate (and that the X actually gets it!)
